Freak Show Without A Tent: Swimming with Piranhas, Getting Stoned in Fiji and Other Family Vacations, by Nevin Martell

Fishing for piranhas in the Amazon, getting stoned at Fijian kava ceremonies, and witnessing the ancient ritual of land diving on Pentecost Island is the stuff of National Geographic cover stories – and Nevin Martell’s childhood vacations. His family’s globetrotting took them from the South Pacific to South America and many points nowhere in-between. Though their lifestyle choices were eccentric, the locations they visited exotic, and the people they met extraordinary, these escapades are firmly grounded in the trials, tribulations, and tribal rivalries that plague all families. Freak Show Without a Tent is a grandly hilarious memoir-misadventure that is equal parts National Lampoon’s Vacation, Romancing the Stone and Crocodile Dundee. Woven seamlessly into the stories of exploring the far side of the far side, near death experiences and gastronomical catastrophes is the story of a young boy coming of age, the evolving relationship between a father and son, and a family discovering its own boundaries. With the honesty and innocence that can only come through the eyes of youth, Martell reveals the symbiosis of interdependence and independence that exist deep within both rainforests and families. To paraphrase a family motto: buy the ticket, take the ride, and hope you survive, so that you can tell your therapist all about it.

Review
"In the guise of this strange and funny chronicle of a lifetime of adventure travel, Nevin Martell has slyly traced his evolution from boy to man and delivered a sharp-edged portrait of one modern American family, warts and ... well, more warts. Part P.J. O'Rourke, part David Sedaris, it is both a rollicking fun trip and a surprisingly tender exploration of the ties that bind." - Todd Kliman, author of The Wild Vine

"Freak Show Without a Tent is the family vacation you never went on (but kinda wish you had). Traveling the globe is all fun and games until the kids discover they're the grown-ups in the equation. Fondly remembered and colorfully-narrated, this book is one-part warmth and two-parts crazy - Martell's genius lies in finding beauty in life's awkwardest moments." - Andrew Evans, National Geographic Traveler

"A funny and poignant account of growing up in unlikely places. Part travel memoir, part The Mosquito Coast, Freak Show Without a Tent is a delight to read." - J. Maarten Troost, author of Headhunters on My Doorstep and Getting Stoned with Savages

"[I]t's easy to imagine that a sitcom pitch based on this book is floating around somewhere." -Washington City Paper

"...Martell chronicles his childhood adventures to far-flung locales in this quirky and humorous travel memoir. These aren't your ordinary Disney trips -- did your family vacations ever include owl hunting in the Azores or fishing for piranhas in the Amazon? Martells' did." - The Travel Channel, Summer Reading List

an adventure book, a coming-of-age tale, a family drama, and a boatload of fun
By David Evans
If you think your father embarrassed you growing up, read how Nevin Martell was swimming at the beach on Tobago and looked ashore to see his father: "He had stripped off every stitch of clothing and was strolling down the beach completely naked. The family jewels...dangled in the sea breeze. He had found a bag somewhere and was picking up garbage, making him look like a crazy custodian at a tropical nudist colony." It gets better when two other visitors arrive at the beach.

Martell's true tales have the unique ability to both resonate with whatever travel experiences you've had (embarrassing parents, struggling not to wretch on a particular vile bit of local cuisine to avoid offending a host) and at the same time make you aspire to greater adventure. Even while his father's constant search for authenticity and uniqueness of travel experiences is infuriating, I couldn't resist wanting more of it in my own travel. His father succeeds in finding the uniqueness and authenticity he seeks: Whether it's fishing for piranha in Venezuela or watching men leap from towers in Vanuatu, every story is an adventure to parallel those in the novels that Martell lugs around throughout, from Robinson Crusoe to Lord of the Flies to The Return of the King.

The mix of high and low culture is refreshing and fun, fun, fun. One moment we're in the middle of an extended comparison between the latest Martell family adventure and the plot of Moby Dick or a throw-away reference to Of Mice and Men, and next we're excitedly awaiting the screening of James Bond's Goldfinger in Western Samoa or comparing tonsillitis to getting beaten up by the Karate Kid's brutal Cobra Kai.

The language is delicious! Every page is a flood of imagery, from a calypso band that "sounded like a herd of cats being blended into a most unappetizing milkshake" to a Land Rover ride that made the family "bounce up and down like a set of mismatched Whac-A-Moles" and on to going so long without a decent meal that - when one appears - the family "lunged for seats and inhaled the food like a pack of zombies devouring an unfortunate soul." Martell spends part of his time as a food writer, and traces of that emerge with luscious culinary imagery: In Vanuatu, where there is an apparent history of cannibalism, Martell narrates: "Picking up one of the larger treats, I took a big bite. Crispy on the outside with a warm interior like spongy bread, it possessed the smallest hint of sweetness and no discernible taste of an unfortunate missionary" or "freshly squeezed mango juice alongside plastic plates brimming with stir-fried rice mixed with caramelized onions, strands of pepper, and scallion rounds."

I had a great time reading this book. You will, too.

A fun easy read with surprising depth.
By S. Liss
At first, Freak Show Without A Tent appears to be a hysterical collection of stories about exotic travel by a family only slightly weirder than yours. It is that, and many of the situations the Martells find themselves in will make you laugh out loud. By the time you finish this really enjoyable little book, however, you'll realize it is much more.

Through Nevin's detailed and flowing writing you gain an insight into how one family changes as their children pass through adolescence. As you share some of the highlights of those tumultuous years the reader inevitably reflects on his/her own family and how each member of that family has to sacrifice a little to make the whole thing work.

That self sacrifice is not easy, and it's not always pretty. Nevin doesn't shy away from how hard it is to make a family work in modern America, even when those modern Americans are exploring the remote reaches of the south pacific and south America. So buy this book for the adventure and the laughs. There are plenty of both. As you read it, however, take a moment to enjoy the deeper observations and reflect on how crazy your own family is. How no one in a family gets to do exactly what they want exactly when they want to. And yet those little sacrifices are worth it, because for good or ill our families define who we are and who we will be. Whether we emulate our parents or use them as the epitome of what we do not want to be, their influence is undeniable. That gets explored in this little gem of a book as well.

Highly recomended

Other things may change us, but we start and end with family.
By S. Lamparello
Freak Show Without a Tent opens with a six-year-old boy praying to Santa Claus while sitting in a flight attendant's lap on a rapidly-descending, depressurized airplane. And that may be the most normal thing about Nevin Martell's family vacations. If you pick up this book, be prepared to be sucked in. You will not be able to put it down. Vividly detailed, Nevin's accounts of his family's various adventures sound like the premise for a great novel--and then you realize they actually happened. It's a wonder any of them survived to tell the story! (Even though you know they did, because Nevin wrote the book, there are moments you will find yourself doubting whether they will get out of the situation alive.)

You'll follow Nevin from a small boy, wide-eyed and ready for adventure, to a teenager struggling to fit in with his peers while being whisked away at a moment's notice by his parents--and reacting in every way you'd expect a teenager to react, to an adult who suddenly finds the tables turned. I don't want to give away any more of the book's tales than I already have, because I believe a reader will only gain a true appreciation for them by experiencing them him or herself.

Perhaps it's because my own family's most exciting vacation adventure involved a trip to the beaches of New Hampshire during which my older brother caught starfish and left them in a bucket on the porch, where they died overnight and smelled up the whole house, but I found myself wishing I had grown up in Nevin's family. About halfway through the book, I realized it was so much more than just a travel journal. All families struggle to get along at times, but while for most people these struggles are played out over Thanksgiving dinner or a family wedding, the Martell family struggles played out in exotic, remote locations thousands of miles from home. These are people you'll wish you knew--as real as it gets.

Don't pick this book up if you have to be somewhere in an hour, because you will be late. I finished this book late (for me) tonight, and intended to go to sleep and write this review tomorrow morning. But after an hour of lying in bed, still thinking about the book and its touching and poignant ending (yes, I shed a tear or two), I realized I would not be able to wait until morning. So here I sit, a mere 5 hours before my alarm will go off, telling you to read this book. You will not regret it!
