Good Study Guide for PERT

It's a helpful book that gives examples how the Pert test would be and the format for the test. It's better than finding a test on-line, because this is a book that you can carry around and is easy to read and comprehend. This book is meant as a brush up - it's to help remember all the things you learned before taking the test. The reading and writing parts help you to learn critical reading, and the math helps you pick out problems you may not be familiar with so you can get familiar with them before taking the Pert.

This is relatively thin book, but that also is an advantage, as it doesn't intimidate the student or overwhelm them with items they need to learn.

My 9th grader took the Pert after using this book as a study guide. She passed the entire test (even after falling asleep twice during the test) and amazingly scored very high. She recommends it as guide.

I bought this hoping that it would help me and it did. In the end I passed my exam and I am so happy. I like that it is a simple book and I do not have to carry multiple things to try and have everything that I need to study.

This book was just what our daughters needed to pass the test. Our oldest daughter struggled to pass one part of the test, but after using this book she passed it with flying colors.

Well Worth Reading

As a retired educator, I applaud efforts to end school corporal punishment. Breaking the Paddle makes a great case for doing so as well as providing parents and child advocates tools for protecting children and getting it banned in state legislatures.

Important advocay to protect children

Nadine Block is a tireless, respected, and effective campaigner against corporal punishment in public schools. She has detailed the corrosive effects of school corporal punishment--a practice still legal in much of the United States, though banned throughout Europe and in many other countries, including Iraq and Pakistan. This book can really provoke thoughts on how to improve the learning environment in our schools.

This book is an inspiration to advocates for better treatment of children in our schools, giving model after model of how ordinary citizens can bring about social change through having "right" on their side, and by being persistent in the cause. It gives information and strategies, and would be a great assignment for professors of education to use in their classes.

Ugh

I purchased this book based on the relatively high number of 5 star reviews. Wow. What a mistake.

It's terrible. I hate to write a bad review, but this book just stinks. The writing isn't very good; the characters are more caricatures; the plot is predictable and cliched. The hero and heroine aren't even that likeable.

The hero is obnoxious, rude, overbearing and chauvinistic. It really bugs me when male characters start referring to the female character as "baby" and "sweetheart" right off the bat. It just comes across as condescending and obnoxious. And unfortunately, the author's attempt at making the hero likeable by giving him some nice habits just doesn't work. He's an ass.

The heroine is a pissant. She swings from angry to weepy, and seriously? After escaping from a horribly abusive relationship she accepts the way the hero treats her - either overbearing and brutish or else as if she's a child - without drop kicking him to the curb? Come on.

The bad guy was so predictable. I had him pegged from the first moment he met the heroine.

The speed that relationships form in this book is ridiculously unrealistic. And yeah, in romance novels there is certainly quite a bit of artistic license on this point, but in this book it just makes the entire story line even more preposterous.

I wanted to like this book. I did finish it, hoping it would get better. It didn't. I'm glad didn't purchase the second book.

A sexy detective and gorgeous firefighter--Fun stuff!

What happens when an alpha-male detective, who will do whatever it takes to find a killer and keep his town safe, falls head over heels for a gorgeous female firefighter, who has been to hell and back and is determined to keep fighting for her freedom (especially after she's accused of murder)? Plenty of sparks and sizzle, that's what.

Playing with Fire is about two strong-minded people falling in love against their will, which makes for plenty of fun and heat.

Taylor Lee kept me turning the pages, wanting to know if this unlikely pair could overcome the obstacles keeping them apart, including her dark and twisted past. Five stars for keeping me glued to my Kindle until I finished Nate and Erin's story.

Taut, hot, suspenseful read

I had read another romantic suspense of Taylor Lee's so I had to check this one out as well. And the author did not disappoint. The heroine is a woman on the run from an abusive ex and when she finally settles in a small town she becomes a firefighter. She's nice and feisty, but it was her vulnerability that pulled me in. I liked the homey touches with Connor and his family, but I confess, I did not like the Nate the hero at first. He was too obnoxious for my taste, but the author gradually revealed his hurtful past and took him through a character arc that satisfied in the end. The plot with Erin getting wrongly accused of murder makes for a taut and riveting roller-coaster of a read.

AT LAST: A SENSIBLE PSYCHOLOGIST

Psychologists make great protagonists for mysteries and thrillers. After all, they must contend daily with the darkest of human secrets. Far too often, however, authors portray their psychologist heroines as so determined to "protect" a suspected murderer that they put themselves and others in unnecessary jeopardy. I often find myself wanting to shake some sense into the psychologist. So I was delighted to find Kate Huntington not only competent and likable, but also totally aware of the dangers her clients might present -- and unafraid to cooperate with the police. Now here is a psychologist I can believe in.

Secondary characters are also a delight, with both the men and the women totally believable. The story is fast-paced and strong enough that I'm not sure the author needed the Prologue; she had me hooked from the story's first lines. I read the book in two days.

This is the first book I've read by this author. Though it's the third in the series, the story stands on its own merits. I look forward to the next book in the series! -- Lynn Franklin, author of The Blue Diamond: Jeweler's Granddaughter Mystery #1

Great Read--Psychological Thriller

Kassandra Lamb's latest suspense is a `ripped from the headlines' look at the murky aftermath of childhood abuse. Her character, Kate Huntington, is recovering from a huge personal tragedy and getting back to her counseling practice when she's accused by a group of "false memory" fanatics of manipulating her clients and planting untrue accusations of abuse. Thankfully, Kate has allowed a good friend, and a good guy, Skip Canfield, into her life and he vows to protect her from the increasingly threatening behavior of an unknown stalker in the group. This story provides a satisfying balance of love story and psychological thriller with an ending that's equally satisfying. Highly recommended for readers who like a little romance with their whodunit, and who are interested in learning more about the challenging world of psychotherapy and abuse counseling

The characters and plot are developed beautifully. I kept changing my mind as to who did it to the end.

First thoughts after.....
Awesome! Closure but leading into another book!

How Distracted Did I Get?
Isla is one tough cookie! She's been through heck and back all her life, a pariah in her own home town, because of a mark on her neck she keeps to herself . She sticks to her house and the business she owns. Enter Dr. Jeremiah Rousseau. He has a PhD in Parapsychology. Jeremiah came to her town to research the possible witch on the island. It was instant attraction but is it enough to get them through the battle that is about to take place?

Fire on the Island is a wonderful book that tempts you with mystery that pulls you in and won't let you go. I had a difficult time putting it down.

I was reading an article the other day on "How To Write Paranormal Romance" (don't ask me why, it was totally random) when I stumbled upon a quote by Christine Feehan (author of Ghost Walkers, Dark Series...etc.) that summed up perfectly my complicated feelings towards paranormal literature. They asked her:

"What is paranormal romance to you?"

Her reply (much cleaner and shorter than I would have ever been to able to express it) was this:

"To me, paranormal is something out of the ordinary. Something extraordinary. When I pick up a book that is paranormal, I know I'm in for a surprise. It might be another world or a ghost or a shapeshifter, it might be the occult or the magic of legends. The one and only thing I will know for certain when I open that book is that it will be different. I love that element of surprise and I'm always willing to go where the author takes me. They won't all be perfect, but there will be something there, something magical that will transport me to the world of the extraordinary. That's what paranormal means to me personally."

Pretty brilliantly said, if I do say so myself, but there is one sentence in particular that I want you to focus on.

"The one and only thing I will know for certain when I open that book is that it will be different."

This is especially true in regards to witches.

Most paranormal "entities" (for lack of a better word) are rooted. Vampires drink blood. Ghosts haunt and werewolves shift. The way these inevitabilities occur are different from novel to novel, (that's what sets them apart from each other) but witches (though bathed in a very long and unique history) aren't limited to one set of ideals. They can be bad. They can be good. Light can come from their eyes, some fly, others twitch their noses. You get my drift. Witches are the one category of paranormal fiction that is a free fall into never never land. An author can do what they want, when they want, without the threat of folklore desecration. In short, witches are a clean pallet.

Which is why (for a person that lives for originality in her reading material) I am shocked that it has taken me this long to return to a past love of mine.

Witches.

At the risk of sounding incredibly confused I can say (confidently) that I both loved and hated this novel. *slaps forehead*

While the originality of the plot captured my heart in all of it's good versus evil glory, the characters left me wanting.

I have said (over and over again) that a book can be broken with bad characterization. "If you don't feel the characters, you won't care about the characters." Sound familiar? Sure it does, I've only said it ten thousand times. So when I got to 13% of Hogan's "Fire on the Island" and her two lead characters (Isla and Jeremiah) were already christening the sheets I knew I was going to have a problem with them. I am all for love. (Go Team L Word!) But it's hard to be properly draw in when there was NO push and pull to intrigue you to the couple in the first place. There is a word for this amongst bloggers, it's called "Insta-love" and it happens more than anyone would like to admit. Delayed gratification is a wonderful thing when it comes to literature. Now, I'm not saying you need to string the 3 word confession out between 17 different books, or even keep them from pawing all over each other like horny teenagers, I'm just suggesting that there is a little more ocean before you start the motion. (Wow, that was lame even for me.)

Now, despite my lackluster feelings towards the main duo I will stand proudly on my soapbox and say that the "story" behind Isla and Jere's troubles was outstanding.

Optioning for a witch who didn't know she was a witch (on Hogan's part) was truly inspiring. Combining the exploration of Isla's powers for not only herself but the audience at the same time added a level of endearment that would have been lost if she had come in eyes a blazing. Isla was clueless. We were clueless. The story allowed us to discover those aspect together and because of that, the story (aka the witchery) flowed beautifully. There was action, there was deception, and more importantly...an evil demon daddy who (let's be honest) is always GREAT for tension filled moments.

So...the most important question of all is whether my gut check response to Isla and Jere's spit swapping was enough to offset my adoration for the epic battle of lost souls that made up the majority of the novel. To which I say no.

There may have been more than a few moments of eye rolling repetition (and lip biting) but overall, the ending story was so compelling that I got over it and took it for what it was. A means to an end.

Average book overall, but a decent start to a new series.

Happy reading my fellow Kindle-ites and remember: Trust is more than just a word.

Hate to love or Love to hate it.

To be honest the story is more a 3.5 but after careful consideration I felt there was enough to bump it up to a 4 instead of dropping it down to a 3.

The story is compelling. The characters sometimes fall short but the story keeps you interested enough to keep reading. The Paranormal is many ways in this story as you have witches, shape shifters, and demons. Good Vs Evil. And the whole I didn't know I was a witch is a great theme.

I enjoy watching those come into their powers and the adventure that causes them to realize the truth about what they are. Or at least peek into it.

I can't wait to get my hands on book 2 of the series. And maybe even an autographed copy of book one if J K Hogan would let me ;) No pressure though lol.

A great story that you'll love or love to hate. Either way you won't put it down.

We met Clark when he opened his new studio on the Northshore of Oahu.
We always brought our out of town guests to his studio.

About the Author
Kurt Koontz was born and raised in Boise, Idaho.  At the age of 36, he retired from a sales executive career at a Fortune 500 company.  For the past decade, his travels have taken him to all corners of the world.  These adventures are off the beaten path and usually involve physical and mental endurance. In September of 2012, he walked 500 miles on the Camino de Santiago in Spain. The journey was a life changing experience and he decided to write his first book to share the experience.

Yes, it has a lot of helpful inside information about the Camino. Yes, it draws a great picture of the experience. Yes, it has some historical background of the history you'll be strolling by. But for me, it spoke more to the emotional/spiritual journey.
I'm a middle aged man facing a lot of the same struggles: fatigue, winds, rain, inclines, descents, declines, addiction, inability to enjoy the now, little time to take a breath, engage, get to know people. I feel like I've got my compass back.

Okay, I'll admit that I'm a bit of a book snob. As my tastes tend to run toward British classical literature, I wasn't sure if One Million Steps would be my "cup of tea." But because it was a gift from a friend, I decided to give it a try. I wasn't prepared to find what I found -- a page turner that I ended up reading in one sitting! I didn't expect to feel the need to suppress giggles and outright belly laughs at the antics of the pilgrims on the El Camino. And I certainly didn't expect to weep at the sometimes painful life stories shared by Kurt Koontz. One Million Steps is so much more than an account of Koontz' journey walking the El Camino. It is poignant, expressive, funny story and an excellent read. Do yourself a favor and purchase this book! No matter what your tastes, One Million Steps will take you on a ride you won't soon forget!

Worth the read

For anyone planning to walk to Camino -or even if you dream of doing so-, this is an engaging read. I was hooked from the first words. Loved reading about Kurt's insights and lessons learned along the way- the people, the scenery- just enough detail without becoming boring. Doesn't contain lists of what to take, etc but there are plenty of books with that. This was about how the walk changes you. Loved it!
