Barbara Marshak is the author of two nonfiction books, "Michigan & Rookie: Guardians of the Night" (2011), the remarkable story of a cop and his K9 partner, and "Hidden Heritage: The Story of Paul LaRoche" (2006), the inspiring biography of the award-winning Native American recording artist, Brule. "Hidden Heritage" earned Finalist in the Biography category of the National Indie Excellence Awards (2007), and the USA Best Book Awards (2006). In 2008 Barbara won a writer's residency at the Devils Tower National Monument, co-sponsored by the Bearlodge Writers in Sundance, Wyoming, where she had the privilege to work on the manuscript for "Seeds of Salton". Barbara's writing portfolio includes over 150 published stories and articles. She is the creator of Sundance Imagery, a collection of framed photographs taken on research trips for her books. She is a regular presenter at writers' events and lives on a ranch in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota.

About the Author
Arnold Tubis is a retired physics professor who was a faculty member at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana from 1960 to 2000 (nine years as department head). He now lives in Carlsbad, California. Origami has been an avocation of his since the early 1960s and his models have been exhibited in the USA, Japan, Europe, and Israel. He is the co-author of Decorative Origami Boxes from Single Squares (with Leon Brown, British Origami Society, 2003), Unfolding Mathematics with Origami Boxes (with Crystal Elaine Mills, Key Curriculum Press, 2006), and Fun with Folded Fabric Boxes (with Crystal Elaine Mills, C&T Publications, 2007). He has also authored or co-authored about 15 papers on origami in K-12 mathematics education. He is currently focused on designing models that require, at most, a low-intermediate folding skill level, and can be used to enrich the teaching of geometry in middle school and high school. He is currently the coordinator of the Greater San Diego Origami Group.

Making art with money

The only thing I would change is the title. The book gives me step by step instructions on how to make cool geometric shapes from one of the most common paper objects around. This works fine as a tip to leave for the waiter, but I plan to use it more for other purposes, like:
Having cool dollar sculptures at my beside.
Using larger denominations and giving them as self-gift-wrapped presents for my wife or children.
Using the same folding design on a photograph that I print out and then cut to the dimensions of a dollar, with my son's face right where George Washington's belongs.
Use blank paper, draw the fold lines onto it, and fold it up like the design on page 12. Turn it over and write a treasure hunt clue on it, making sure that the words cross over the fold lines. Then unfold it and give it to the kids as a clue in a point to point treasure hunt (they then have to re-fold it to read directions to their next clue. Does not work for kindergarteners).
My kids are too old for this one, but again start with a blank sheet of $1 proportions. Have your child paint or draw on it. Then fold it up as shown in directions. Unless your child is an artistic genius, this will improve the refrigerator art installations.
Remove Ipod. Replace with book and dollar. At 30 minutes, test for doneness. May require further stirring.

I will continue to experiment with Tubis' instructions. What if I make this part a little curved? What if I stop at this step and let it be asymmetrical and standing? What if it isn't completely flat? The book does not require you to stop at page 39. It is an invitation to continue finding the infinite and cool shapes that can be made with paper.

Buy the Book Version, Lots of Information

This book has a mountain of great recipes. I got the Kindle version and I should have gotten the book. It is hard to find what I'm looking for on the Kindle version. There were also two chapters that were not available on the Kindle. I do plan to by the book version because it does have so many recipes. In short buy the book.

It's kind of like me saying

This woman knows so much about herbs and oils that she assumes that everyone else does too. This book was poorly written with missing words right in mid-sentence. Her recipes are just thrown together forgetting not everyone would just know what she means. It's kind of like me saying, " Demetria, take the main drag down to the old Foster place, go north to the Smith farm...about 20 miles out." Get my point? Now I have to find a book to explain hers!

Kara Powell, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of the Fuller Youth Institute and a faculty member at Fuller Theological Seminary. Named by Christianity Today as one of "50 Women to Watch," Kara is the author or coauthor of a number of book including Sticky Faith, Deep Justice Journeys, and the Good Sex Youth Ministry Curriculum.

A Huge Gift for the Church

As a youth minister I can clearly say that this resource offers the practical and proven help I need to ensure my church takes the discipleship of young people seriously. Kara Powell and Brad Griffin along with other seasoned ministry veterans continue to stay connected to the trenches of youth ministry while creating theologically rich and culturally relevant material for the church.

The Launch Kit is presented in such a way that youth ministry leaders and volunteers of all experience levels will be inspired and equipped to help our churches stay the course in long-term faith development of teenagers. This is a must have for any youth ministry.

A great culmination of quality research

This book is a culmination of many years of quality research, not just a new fad or the next big idea. Since I have been tracking with the FYI research for the past five years, I can see how they have found a brilliant way to combine it all into a guide that helps take all those great ideas and bring them to life. Also, its methodology is one that is consistent with a sociological understand about how people change and it takes that into account as an instrumental guide. You can't "read through" this book, it forces you to actually take the steps necessary to move a ministry forward.

Very user friendly and practical

The Sticky Faith books, backed by research on why teens leave their faith when they graduated from college, is a great starting point for parents, leaders, and pastor to being to think about helping churches and family become "sticky." The Sticky Faith Launch Kit provides leaders with practical tools, conversation starters, and resources to help anyone put key programs and practices in place that will help shift a culture.
You could tell that the authors know that not every church looks the same or struggles with the same issues. Therefore, the book did not just give a list of things to-do. Instead, the book provides resources to help create conversations, that move into ideas and practices, in order to slowly change a culture.
The book also comes with access to helpful online videos and resources. The two most helpful are the online videos that help create conversations and learning and the online community where youth pastors from around the world can share ideas.
This book is for anyone who has read the sticky faith books and/or been to the seminars and is asking the question, "what do I do now?" or "How do I help my church change?"

A former advertising copywriter and television executive, Robb Cadigan lives with his wife and two children in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Before becoming a full-time writer, Cadigan shucked oysters, drove a forklift, waited tables, sold clothes, edited TV Guide, and wrote advertisements for products as diverse as shoes, watches, and vacuum cleaners. For thirteen years, he was a marketing and television executive for QVC and helped develop the retailer into the world’s most profitable TV channel. Phoenixville Rising is a must-read!

Fabulous book with unforgettable characters! An insightful look into the cultural impact of economic transition, capturing both the beginnings of the industrial revolution and the beginnings of the transition from an industrial to a data/service driven economy, which is still underway today. Robb Cadigan's fiction is historically very plausible as well as emotionally engaging. Each time he moves from one era to the other you find yourself almost regretting stepping away from one story line, but quickly absorbed into the other era's characters and events. I highly recommend this book, not just to residents of the real town of Phoenixville, Pennsylvania, but to all readers with an interest in great characters, a gripping story, and a thought-provoking view into American cultural forces in transition.

Unlikely Heroes

Robb Cadigan's debut novel is a wonderfully vivid portrait of a town, of a way of life and of the people who inhabit it today and who created it over a century ago.
Through parallel narratives perceptively woven together, the author connects the birth, death and resurrection of a quintessentially American industrial town through the love, courage and loyalty of unlikely heroes past and present. His two central characters are authentic and richly drawn but are heroes no less unlikely as they evoke visions of the unlikeliest of movie heroes, Ratso and Joe Buck.
But it's Cadigan's gift for beautifully written and at times poetic prose that makes PHOENIXVILLE RISING at its core a love story wrought with intelligence, depth and most prominently hope that is by any measure of a writer's experience, a glowing literary accomplishment.

Past and present intertwine; how much of life do we determine, and what is determined for us? Robb explores these themes and more in Phoenixville Rising. Beautifully imagined and written, the old Phoenixville comes alive in a story that spans a week - and a lifetime. I felt the tidal pull of the past on the present and the present on the past as the story pulled me along in its wake. I found myself trying to plunge into Phoenixville-then to change events - because I came to care so much about the characters that I wanted to save them from what was (was it?) inevitable. This book pulled me under from the very beginning. I emerged satisfied - but wanting more. A good place to be for a book lover.

if you had issues with intimacy and sexuality and need some daily guidance in learning new ways to create healthy sexuality in your life, this is the book for you. there are daily recommendations which when tried are guaranteed to help those who have never been successful at cultivating intimacy or those who are in relationships that want to strenghten or repair it to make it more satisfying and enduring. Especially cogent for people who have experienced infidelity, felt betrayed or just weren't exposed to healthy intimate relationships in their family of origin so they had poor examples for providing a healthy models essential to teaching the life lessons around sexuality and intimacy so crucial for forming healthy attitudes and practices for their primary relationships.

I really like the daily suggestions for things to do or questions to ask yourself/your partner, which makes it more interactive. It pushes you take things to a deeper, more connected place. If your doing this yourself, and you have never done such a thing before, your going to need a few resources to refer to, and this one is helpful. It gives a good overview, and the charts and checklists are helpful. It helps you organize the process by giving you an overview, with some helpful tips. But. . . you will be searching the net for all kinds of answers to your individual special case. I had children i had to file for, which this this did not go into, but i ended up using the same forms for them. Consulted a paralegal before submission who said i was on the right track.

Save green and get a green card

Buy this book is you want to obtain a green card and save thousands of dollars on attorney fees. My husband and I consulted with an attorney before applying for his green card, and the attorney would have charged us at least $5,000 for her services. Instead, we decided to compile the application on our own. Doing that was absolutely easier thanks to this book. It presents the process in a clear, easy-to-understand manner. It contains helpful checklists and advice, as well as really demystifying the application process.

This isn't a perfect book, and I think it could use an update. For example, the chapter about attending the green card interview indicates that it's most likely that the applicant would learn that they're approved at the end of the interview. It turns out that that is incorrect. We received a form letter at the end of our green card interview that stated that the case was then under a continuance and that we wouldn't learn the status of our application for at least 120 days. Based on the expectations set by this book, that felt devastating and caused us to think we'd made a mistake in the interview. However, upon investigation, the form letter we received was completely normal, and almost no one received approval right at the end of the interview, which makes sense when you understand that the USCIS officers conducting the interviews are very busy and would have to navigate the computer systems of several different agencies in order to complete the process and grant the green card at any point during the interview. In our case, we learned via email the next day that the green card was approved, and we received the physical green card in the mail about a week later.

All of this being said, we highly recommend this book, and are so glad we used it to submit out application ourselves. But before you buy it PLEASE NOTE that this book works best if you are very detail oriented and can abide by very specific instructions yourself. Our green card application ended up weighing 7.5 pounds and was huge, largely because we followed the instructions closely, which meant including a variety of federal forms with all of the various documentation that each required. When received by USCIS, everything went off smoothly and we didn't have any issues, because the book is thorough and detailed BUT ALSO because we were very detail conscious and methodical ourselves, which meant putting many hours into the preparation and mailing of the application. If you are willing/capable of doing that too, then this book is a great option and can save you thousands of dollars.

Not your typical romance

If you are looking for a romance where the two lovers, parted by tragedy, evil machinations and unforeseen circumstances, reunite and then fall into each other's arms, then this book is not for you. However, if you are looking for an intelligent, well written family story, I can recommend this book. I won't reveal too much about it; I would rather not spoil the wonderful unfurling of the story. The characters are real and believable; even when one character is revealed to have acted terribly, we can understand why the person did so. The leading characters are realistically drawn and act as one supposes real people might.

Take your time and savor this engrossing book.

Great Read!

This book has been on my to read list ever since it was recommended to me by a friend. I finally had a chance to sit down to read it this week and I couldn't put it down! Good intentions is the story of Maggie, which begins after she graduates and spans until she is in her 30's. The twists and turns that follow in her personal life keep you hooked hoping that she finally find the love and life that she deserves and has been searching for. Check out this book from a brand new author!

It will pull you right in and keep a tight hold on you

Pediatric therapist Maggie Miller has survived a car accident that killed her brother and mother. She has let this accident define her. She has bad taste in men, until she meets Ryan Milan. Ryan is Maggie's best friend, Matt Slavin's best friend. Ryan and Maggie start dating and one thing leads to another, until Ryan has to rush home because his father is dying. When he is unable to return to Boston and Maggie, Maggie decides to move on and not date anyone. Then seven years later they are reunited and life is so different then when they first met and fell in love.

This is a story that grabbed me from the very beginning. I actually read it in one day, not being able to put it down. Maggie is a character that I was cheering for from the very beginning. She was making it on her own in a tough world, without a lot of family support, although you weren't told why until later in the story. The fact that she just wanted to help other children as someone had done for her when she was younger made her an amazing person. Her relationship with Matt reminded me of the one I have with my best guy friend. The sparks they were between them were pretty much ignored since they knew it would not be good for their friendship to take that leap.

Then there is the romance between Maggie and Ryan. I laughed at how they danced around each other, neither sure what the other was thinking or wanting to take that first step. When they finally got together you knew it was going to be hot and I was not disappointed. Ryan fell from my graces when he rushed home, not because he went home, but because he would not even respond to Maggie. And then when they found each other again I was sadly disappointed by how he treated Maggie. I ended up thinking him a jerk and was worried that they would get back together.

Kathryn Biel wrote a novel that will pull you right in and keep a tight hold on you. I will recommend this book to any chic-lit lover.

I have read better books on Melchizedek.

If this were my first book on Melchizedek I guess I would find it to be ok but it is not I found Dr Kluane had a better book on the subject. Mr Myles uses so much poetic license in to make a point that as I got on into the book I found that I wanted to check some of his listed references . The first one I checked was a reference he made to Isaiah 12.9 when I checked my bible there was no Isaiah 12.9 I don't know if this was a typographical error or not but became sceptical of his writing for the rest of the book .In the last chapter he said the writer of Ecclesiastes implies that money is everything. I went to Ecclesiastes in my bible and found in chapter 6 that wealth is not the goal of life. I am not a professional but I had problems with this book.

This is a must read for all kingdom of God citizens! The revelation on the power and purpose of Holy Communion has forever revolutionized my life and ministry. I do a fair amount of reading and can honestly say this one of the most valuable books I have ever purchased. Legacy of the Bloodborn by Max Cooper

Fantasy is a huge market. Whether it be with literature or books, video or board games, cards or toys, the magical worlds we've come to know and love are prevalent in today's society and probably will last indefinitely. Max Cooper's Legacy of the Bloodborn comes into the market as a new world altogether.
The story begins with the capture of the orc Warchief's son, whom the Guild King has been hunting for as a bartering tool. Should the Guild King get the Warchief's son as a hostage, the war may come to an end with a treaty and save more lives than it would inevitably waste. The Guild King's closest friend and most trusted general, Umbra, is introduced to us as a second main character who leads what is told to be the strongest guild on the entire continent. We're given some history that the current situation falls after a long period called the Great War, and the Guild King defeats the orcs on the battlefield, successfully signing a peace treaty with the Warchief; the orc's son serves as the fulcrum for the victory. From there, the rebuilding and new era begin.
For the first chapter and a half, things were quite decipherable. The Broken Lances came into the picture as knights who had good personalities and hearts for war, led by a man who reveals little of himself at first. Umbra instantly became my favorite character. He seemed to have many sides and a multi-faceted personality, which is essential for any character in a novel--whether it be the protagonist, the antagonist, or the store clerk down the street we only meet once. The battle was intriguing as well. Every fantasy author has a take on orcs--or, at least, they should have--and Cooper presents the warring side as not-quite-barbaric barbarians who are also partly a not-quite-civilized civilization. The halfway point needs to be skirted carefully, and for the first chapter and a half, it was. Then something started to slip, and the story lost its momentum.
One thing I've noticed about Cooper's work is that he has a knack for a large cast. In his last book Smoke-Filled Lies, the cast was confusing to make out and hard to follow along with. Legacy of the Bloodborn shows marked improvement with many characters taking on the lives they're supposed to have, and while I applaud the author, I will say that work still needs to be done. Certain parts made me frustrated with characters slipping way too far from their norms to be taken seriously without any internal dialogue going on to show us if the turn was plausible or not. For instance, near the end of the book--don't worry, no spoilers--the Guild King and Umbra have a huge falling out, and Umbra acts almost like a frightened/frustrated child in front of his old friend. Such a stretch was hard for me to believe and irritating to read.
Throughout the book, I found myself making a map in my head to remember where everything was. I love doing that; making the borders adds to the experience of discovery when reading fantasy, and Cooper does a good job of distinguishing the different regions from one another. As we're led further into the world, each region's borders show an obvious melding where it's hard to distinguish one plain ending and another beginning, such as a cliff meeting a coast, or when one travels to the Midwest; forests don't disappear, but they become sparser and less dense and plains take over the majority of space. The change is subtle, easily-noticed, and nice to be eased into. Cooper had no problem building the world. The puzzle seemed to lay in giving the reader a sense of place as each scene progressed into the next. Chapters move too fast from one building/place/situation to the next, so I found myself going back a page or two to get a firm sense of where the characters were.
Another thing Cooper seems to have a future dab-hand in is multiple plotlines. Every novel needs more than one thing that keeps the story progressing. Novels mirror life, and life never has just one thing going on at once. Cooper brings in situations that garble the characters' plans, thoughts, or lives, and any reader loves watching to see how things will play out, whether the result is good or bad. The only problem I see here is that some of the plotlines he weaves in don't have a conducive progressive quality to the plot as a whole. While easily fixed, this fluke needs to be caught, and quickly, should the author wish to see the manuscript work together as a fluid and well-thatched whole. Otherwise, unneeded plotlines make for arduous reading and a manuscript full of frayed ends.
Finally, the prose lacks smooth movement. While this trait is very understandable in tense scenes and is actually recommended to be cut-and-dry to increase the tension, the narrative lacked any internal reflection or long enough paragraphs to let both the characters and the world itself take on their own hearts. This type of writing can be improved, however, by showing what the characters are doing to telegraph their internal dialogue. The world also always has the ability to elude to the current atmosphere of the lands with descriptions of the terrain, weather, feeling of the towns, etc. Cooper has the potential to become this kind of writer; all it requires is practice, blood, sweat, tears, coffee, and LOTS of ink and crumpled paper.
Legacy of the Bloodborn had few cusses in it, and minimal alcohol was present. A character gets addicted to "peace grass," which is similar to marijuana, but the addiction brought the character around to some major redemption. There's one scene of intense sexuality with a prostitute; however, the act is only implied, not served to us Fifty Shades style. Violence never gets gratuitous or glorified. One can expect a normal fantasy outing in that field.
This time around with Max Cooper led me far from the too-fast-paced, confusing world of Smoke-Filled Lies into a familiar feel of magic, war, and espionage. Legacy of the Bloodborn was something I did enjoy reading. When compared with the author's last venture, the improvements are glaring and applaudable. I'll be picking up the next book in the History of Galsag series.
