A Funny Book That Respects the Reader

Lots of books set in third and fourth grade are sort of silly and manic in an underpants/fart way, and give scant attention to characters, plot or creative writing. While this book has its silly side and is willing to go for farty laughs, it also has a lot of respect for young readers and tries to do much more, mostly successfully. Mr. Davidsun is not a one note character - there is a lot going on behind the loony façade. Each chapter is based on a different crazy school day, but each chapter also has a lesson or point or bit of wisdom to impart. There is actually a plot, which comes together nicely by book's end. And, the individual kids who make up the main cast of characters, after Mr. Davidsun, are much more developed and rounded out than is usually the case.
The upshot is that this book is fun and funny, but it also has some bits of fairly sophisticated deadpan humor, and a generally good natured quality that reflects an honest regard for the sense of humor and for the sense of the absurd of a fourth grade reader. As a bonus, there are some descriptive passages, some snappy exchanges of dialogue, and some throwaway bits that are nicely and tightly written.
So, this strikes me as a nice find and worth a close look, even if it is a bit off the beaten path. (Please note that I found this book while browsing Amazon Kindle freebies. I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Entertaining & Fun Book

I really enjoyed reading Harley P. Davidsun's Loony Bin. Many unexpected tales await you in this book. It's a story of an unorthodox teacher and his zany 4th grade class. The class is filled with many interesting students who find they can learn just as much as have fun in Mr. Davidsun's class. As I read, I couldn't wait to see what each new day brings in the life of classroom 4D. With chapters titled "Flatu-what?" and "Kiss-a-Mania," you never know what to expect at each page turn. The ending of the story is just as unexpected as the antics of its characters. This laugh-out-loud book is a must read for anyone from late elementary age to 110! You'll be glad you downloaded Harley P. Davidsun's Loony Bin.

Great book! We can only wish that school was this fun!
This book is about a fourth grade classroom (the loony bin) and their crazy, biker-dude teacher (Harley P. Davidsun)! Imagine the look on the kid's faces when they walked in the first day of school and spotted Mr. D. with his biker boots on the desk, thinking-is this really our teacher??? You will love the adventures (and trouble) that Mr. D and the loony bin get into.
