Review
"We want people to take what we say to heart AND a story does it best, BUT most of us don't know how to turn our thoughts into stories, THEREFORE most of us need to read this book." - Alan Alda, Actor, Writer
"A great guide to bridging the gut/data divide." - Andrew Revkin, NY Times, Dot Earth Blog
"The lessons, insights and exercises in this book apply way beyond the academic world. There isn't a communicator out there - whether that's a salesperson, a CEO, an environmental campaigner, or yes, a scientist - who won't benefit from absorbing the lessons so effectively communicated here." - Thomas Hayden, co-author, "The Science Writer's Handbook"
"Storytelling is meant to connect a message to a person's heart, mind and belief system, thus inviting one to take action or make a change in their life. CONNECTION provides a road map to do just that. Reading this book will help you make your messaging more impactful." - Jeff King, Author of "Beyond Drama
"We sponsored the very first version of the Connection workshop which for us was both eye-opening and heart opening. Randy, Dorie and Brian helped us think about the stories we want to tell, and to speak from our feelings as well as from our intellects. This is so important, yet rarely talked about by scientists and bureaucrats (like me!). This book now takes their teachings even further in thinking deeply about stories and how to tell them effectively."
- Shelley Luce, Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission and Foundation
"Based on their extraordinary narratives, Randy, Dorie and Brian have combined and sculpted "Connection" into an amazing resource for anyone with a story to tell (even scientists!)." - Ron Britton, Wildlife Biologist, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Communication wisdom that works
By Thomas Hayden
I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of this book, and I'm planning to use it with my science communication students at Stanford this fall. But the rock-solid communication approach it delivers will be useful far beyond academia.
Here's the thing about communication: we already know how to do it. The principals of truly effective communication have been worked out not through scientific study or psychological insight, but in the long, unbroken chain of human storytelling that starts somewhere around a campfire a hundred thousand years ago and continues until today. The problem is that some of the people with the most interesting stories to tell - and I think scientists are chief among that group - have forgotten the storytelling lessons that underlie any successful effort in communication. Worse, many have come to see the storytelling approach, used so successfully by everyone from trial lawyers, to politicians, to the entire pop culture nexus known as "Hollywood," as a sell-out move.
Nothing could be further from the truth, and the authors of "Connection: Hollywood Storytelling Meets Critical Thinking" make that abundantly clear. Storytelling is tool, pure and simple. And it can be used to get others excited about your cause, your product, or your science just as effectively as Hollywood uses it to sell tickets and sugar water.
But how can you use the storytelling technique to deliver the message you want to get across? That's the question "Connection" answers, by breaking the most effective storytelling techniques of Hollywood down into a clear, straightforward and achievable three-step approach. It's deceptively simple, and it's going to help a lot of people make a difference with their message.
I look forward to using "Connection" with my science communication students this fall, and I'll recommend it to the scientists I work with, too. But the lessons, insights and exercises in this book apply way beyond the academic world. There isn't a communicator out there - whether that's a salesperson, a CEO, an environmental campaigner, or yes, a scientist - who won't benefit from absorbing the lessons so effectively communicated here.

Project Manager's Perspective
By Don Perez, PMP
In a world where an overwhelming percentage of projects fail to be delivered on schedule and project managers compete for the time and support of their stakeholders and project teams, good communication is often the difference maker. But how can a project manager draw in project teams and stakeholders to the dry, boring world of project execution? Connection: Hollywood Storytelling Meets Critical Thinking provides an interesting answer to this question. It's not the subject matter that's dry and boring - it's the PM's communication of that subject matter.
The three authors provide three unique, complementary perspectives on the subject of communication through telling stories. The conversational, "For Dummies" writing styles allow the reader to effortlessly breeze through many sections in a single sitting. The book is well organized and provides a cookbook, step-by-step recipe to conveying good information in a "story style" while winning audiences over to your way of thinking.
I would highly recommend the book to project managers and other business professionals who struggle to effectively communicate - namely all of us.

The Grail
By Ron Britton
My much anticipated advance copy of "Connection: Hollywood Storytelling Meets Critical Thinking" arrived and I read it straight through.... With their interesting stories and examples along the way, Randy, Dorie and Brian take you step by step, helping us to construct, sculpt and deliver a complete story.
"Connection" gets you thinking about lots of possibilities.
I found myself ambling into the nature of communications between the public, and scientists and managers in government, business, and non-governmental organizations. There are so many important topics that an informed public needs to have at their fingertips and those of us working in government, private sector and non-governmental organizations need to join with the public to resolve the issues not just argue them....that takes telling stories for everyone to comprehend. The storytelling techniques presented in "Connection" could just be the grail, the "how-to," the "self-help" tools to give everyone a voice to tell meaningful stories with a point and direction... to bring us more broadly into a constructive discussion.
We know the good story tellers and we like to have them around...nothing worse than the story with a crummy ending, no point, no humor... "Connection" gives us the excellent tools and models for us all to not only develop our stories but to craft them and deliver them.
This was a genuine fun read with a lot of tools to try out!
