Miguel Coyula Aquino (La Habana, 31 de marzo de 1977) es un director de cine independiente cubano graduado de la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) de San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba. Ha realizado varios cortometrajes y mediometrajes hasta su opera prima Cucarachas rojas (2003) que ha obtenido varios premios en Festivales Internacionales. En el 2009 Coyula obtuvo una beca Guggenheim para su segundo largometraje Memorias del Desarrollo (2010), basado en la novela homónima de Edmundo Desnoes. Estrenada en el Festival de Sundance, la película ha obtenido 20 premios internacionales y fue elegida por la Guía Internacional de Cine como la mejor película cubana del año 2010. Actualmente filma su tercer largometraje, Corazón Azul. Mar Rojo, Mal Azul es su primera novela.

Esta novela es la que sirvió al autor como punto de partida para sus posteriores proyectos cinematográficos "Red Cockroaches" y "Corazón Azul." Con una técnica narrativa que recuerda al intrincado e hiperdinámico montaje de sus películas, esta novela habla de un futuro poblado de seres manipulados por la ingeniería genética, lluvias ácidas y crimen. Sin embargo, uno de sus mayores atributos es la forma en la que el creador de alguna manera se integra a la trama y reflexiona sobre el proceso creativo. Una novela del lenguaje, con un estilo que recuerda a Carpentier o a Lezama Lima, ambientada en un futuro hipotético pesimista, que nos recuerda que los seres vivos, así como el planeta, estamos constituidos por 3/4 partes de agua!

Unfortunately, I can't give it less than one star. All I can say is buying books by this author is one habit I'll probably not get started! I'd say don't bother if it were free. It is a collection of empty platitudes, without one useful, practical tip (unless you're someone who thinks "if you can't summon the willpower to do something good for yourself, just ask for God's help" is a useful tip, in which case I just gave you the only useful part of the book, and it didn't cost you 8 bucks!)

Powerful Book

Changing habits can be very difficult and overwhelming. Not after reading this book though! The author does a great job breaking down exactly what habits are, how you should look at them and the steps necessary to change them. If you suffer from lack of motivation or simply do not know where to begin to change your habits, this book will definitely get you started on the right path!

Abundant heart but hollow prose in this candid account of leaving the law

Given the decent quality of the cover (ignoring the period goes after Esq., not before), I expected similar quality from the writing inside. Unfortunately, this little book is in desperate need of an editor. The writing is repetitive and disorganized. Still, I applaud the author for her brazen honesty about the legal industry and what it means to be an unhappy lawyer. She freely disclosed the numbers that seem to haunt some people - a low G.P.A., six-figure debt - and is enthusiastically honest about other "failures" in her life. I write "failures" because she rightfully recognizes our barometer of success is too-often based on what other people value. In the end, her candor and energy sustain the book where her prose is weak.

Since it will likely take no more than an hour of your time, I'd say give it a try if you're considering leaving the law. It's comforting to know there are others who recognize some of the unique psychological blocks that prevent lawyers from leaving what can be a toxic profession. If you can wade through the repetition and non-existent sense of narrative structure, you might find a kindred spirit. Kudos to Ms. Rucker for her positivity.

Recovering but wandering attorney

Another lawyer friend emailed me and sent me this book, insisting I read it. I did, he was right and it's just what I needed. It was funny and captured so many of the fears, hesitations, and defeats I've experienced over the years as I waffled back and forth over and over again about leaving the practice of law. It motivated me to stop making excuses and start asking myself what Rucker calls the hard questions:

1) Who am I? (not as existential as it sounds so relax)
2) What is my purpose? (see #1 and just ponder)
3) What will make me happy? (go deeper than money and being debt free... it's about ongoing, day to day happiness)

Simple, right? Sure until the voices in your head circle back with all the typical reasons (money, prestige, etc.) to join and stay in the practice. And those voices always get in the way. This is an ongoing exercise so stick with it. More than anything, I appreciate how the author lets us into her world and exposes everything including her first year crisis where she realized she actually did not want to practice law at all (calling most JDs, sound familiar?). And that was just the beginning. I needed a kick in the pants to get me going on my "next chapter' and stop settling. Rucker's book did just that and I'm starting to reassess things which, if nothing else, is invaluable.

Separately, I would recommend this reading to college kids contemplating the law (or any profession requiring a HUGE financial commitment). If all your answers to the questions point to the legal field, go for it! At a minimum, this will at least get you asking the right questions before you take the leap. Good luck.

No real advice.

I'm sorry to the author for the low rating, and I admit I could only get through three quarters of the book, so perhaps something miraculous happened at the end. Don't be fooled by the title, this book is not a guide to getting out of the practice of law. This is just a casually written personal account of how one person ended up successful after a series of choices. Her advice is to risk it all, get fired, listen to your inner voice, etc. Nothing concrete to take away. I also just didn't connect to the author and her generalizations about attorneys. This book may be good for law students but hardly for someone with an established legal career.

But the mischief god ignores any protest and uses his jump bug Beverly, a nearly two-foot-long mystical cockroach, to whisk Art away to a dimension populated by dwarves in order to acquire a cosmic weapon before a vast evil force can beat them to it. The trouble with this development isn’t that Art particularly dislikes dwarves–he has no feelings about them, really–it’s mainly that these dwarves are attired in Girl Scout uniforms and possessed by the murderous souls of dead dictators. Meanwhile, Art has left behind the one beacon of positivity in his life, Ginny. Tragically, she has fallen in love with the one man who can never love her back. More tragically, she finds herself kidnapped by the most dreaded of the grotesque dwarves from the aforementioned alternate earth. Most tragically, this dwarf relentlessly pits Ginny against her mate in an effort to beat them to the weapon. The story trades off between Art’s and Ginny’s viewpoints, yielding a tale that satirizes many of the common tropes of science fiction adventure stories.

I LOVE this book!!! This book offers great words of wisdom on just about ANY topic you can think of from various respectable sources. From topics such as marriage, parenting, family, and faith to anger, kindness, humility, and forgiveness. A wonderful resource for anyone who needs a point of reference for many of today's life issues.

This book is wonderful!!. I bought it as a Christmas present for my husband as I was thumbing through it I found I would like to have one too!! It will make you laugh, as I read some of the quotes I remember back to my childhood and can hear different people saying them . This is a great book everyone would enjoy it.

About the Author
LLOYD MATTHEW THOMPSON was raised in a strict religious household, home educated from second grade through graduation, and the oldest of nine children. He has since explored, experienced, and been shaped by many other pathways, including Buddhism, Shamanism, Paganism, and New Age. Whether writing, painting, drawing or teaching, reflections of all these can be found in his work.

Right on Target

I read this with the feeling that Lloyd had been following me around and watching how things "unfold" around me my whole life! I could relate to every instance described in his newest book and had very many "aha moments" and "nodding my head in total agreement" that this is exactly how a person like me operates in this world. I had never heard the term Lightworker before but it absolutely fits.

I highly recommend reading this latest work of art to learn about yourself or others around you that have been placed in this world for the benefit of all mankind.

Oh goodness, how do I explain how much I loved this book?

Well, to start off I have never written a book review on Amazon and this one moves me to do so.

There is so much in this book that speaks to us as humans just living on planet Earth. Whether you identify as a lightworker or don't even know what one is. It doesn't matter.

This book is about being you. Being true to yourself and everything that entails. Holding a space for yourself and being honest about who you are and what lights your fire. How to be with other people while being true to yourself.

From the book:

How then can a human be an example to other humans?

By being human.

By being fearlessly human.

This book tells you how to be fearlessly human. What a blessing!

I dog eared a lot of pages and found myself saying, "YES! This is precisely what I have found going though life and in my desire to help others." It is not a self-help book putting out platitudes and telling you to just love yourself. Life on earth can be messy and complicated. How do we let our own light shine while still being available for others? How can we help others when we see despair and pain in the world?

By being honest with ourselves and meeting people where they are.

There are so many pearls in this book. Aw heck, the whole book is easy to read and a pearl unto itself. It is a fast read and there is so much material that I could definitely see entire chapters as future books. I read it easily in one night because I was fascinated.

I don't want to give too much away because I think the author does a great job illuminating how to be fearlessly human, and how that spreads light to others.

If you are on the page for this book, there must be a reason. You are meant to be seeing this and to be thinking about being fearlessly human. Now, the question is what are you going to create? The choice is yours.

Overpriced - Will not add value to your own soapmaking courses

Not impressed with this book. It looks like it would compliment one of the author's classes, but it is almost worthless to a beginner soapmaker teacher. The teacher edition is identical to the student workbook - just in color with a couple pages of answers to some questions.

For the student workbook (which is duplicated in this book)... This book is very thin and contains little instruction. A chunk of the book are blank note pages. About 1/3 of the book lists vendors and a glossary. The bulk of the book with any content (about 1/2 the pages) focuses heavily on lye and looking at MSDS pages from suppliers. While lye safety is important, spending a full page out of 29 content pages just on safety goggles is a bit of a waste. The couple of pages that provide any instructions are very light with short steps and no explanation.

For this book as a teaching tool... This book gives no instruction for teaching the material. A teacher using this workbook will gain no teaching insight. It is literally just a repeat of the student workbook with 3 or so pages that have the answers filled in. It would probably not help in any class beyond the ones the author provides. As a teacher, you should be at the point of knowing this material and teaching without it, but it will also not add any value to most soapmaking courses. Don't waste your money.

I believe the author should only use this book herself in her class or by other teachers in her school. The price is outrageous.

Made me Homesick

I was born and raised in Newport Beach 51-71 until something called Vietnam took me away. I have been back a couple times for family events, but anything I want to return home, I just pick up this book. The stories are all real and most are from a time that I remember only too well. I look forward to more books of Newport. Thanks Judge for taking me Home after so many years of being away.

Judge Gardner and his daughter, Nancy, do a wonderful job of describing "The Human Predicament" with love and chuckles on every page. Although being familiar with Newport Bay helps, this is a book that will appeal to any student of human nature.
