Soapmaking 101 by Kerri Mixon

As a brand new "soaper" this book was informative, with easy to follow instructions, & very well written. I have tried the recipes with great success & even mixed up a few recipes of my own using her great formula guide. I highly recommend this book to all "soapers" new & experienced. Kerri has inspired me to start my own little business with her easy teaching style & great rapport with her students. Great book!

Very Informative

I thought this guide was very informative and well written using straightforward language. In addition to detailed safety information, it also includes a guide on average saponification values which is helpful if you are using oils purchased from retailers that do not provide specification sheets.

What I found most helpful in the book are worksheets that help break down the nuts and bolts of what goes into cold process soap making. The worksheets guide you through the process of putting together soap 'recipes' so that you can eventually come up with your own recipes rather than just following someone elses. There was a lot more math and chemistry involved in soap making than I realized, neither of which is my forte, but with the worksheets and the information in the book, I was able to figure things out without too much trouble.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to learn more about the process of cold process soap making.

Not recommended - Should only be sold to class students.

Not impressed with this book. It looks like it would compliment one of the author's classes, but it is almost worthless to a beginner soapmaker trying to learn on their own. There are loads of beginner books for soapmaking, which provide more thorough information for beginners. This book is very thin and contains little instruction. A chunk of the book are blank note pages. About 1/3 of the book lists vendors and a glossary. The bulk of the book with any content (about 1/2 the pages) focuses heavily on lye and looking at MSDS pages from suppliers. While lye safety is important, spending a full page out of 29 content pages just on safety goggles is a bit of a waste. The couple of pages that provide any instructions are very light with short steps and no explanation. I believe the author should only sell this book to students in her class. The price seems a bit high for the content.

About the Author
Enoch Arnold Bennett, the son of a solicitor, was born in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1867. He was educated locally and at London University, before working initially as a solicitor's clerk, but soon turned to writing popular serial fiction and editing a women's magazine. After the publication of his first novel, 'A Man from the North' in 1898 he became a professional writer and some of his best and most enduring and acclaimed work, including 'Anna of the Five Towns', 'The Old Wives' Tale', 'Clayhanger', 'The Card' and 'Hilda Lessways' followed over the next twelve years. Soon after the outbreak of the First World War, Bennett was invited to join the War Propaganda Bureau, concerned with finding ways of best promoting Britain's interests. He was in good company, as others who contributed to this effort included Conan Doyle, John Masefield, G. K. Chesterton, Sir Henry Newbolt, John Galsworthy, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling, Gilbert Parker, G. M. Trevelyan and H. G. Wells. Bernard Shaw knew nothing of the Bureau, but attacked what he believed to be jingoistic articles and poems being produced by British writers. Bennett was the one chosen to defend their actions. He served on a War Memorial Committee at the invitation of the then Minister of Information, Lord Beaverbrook, and was also appointed director of British propaganda in France. His spells in Paris added to his reputation as a man of cosmopolitan and discerning tastes. After the War he inevitably returned to writing novels and also became a director of the 'New Statesman'. Bennett's great reputation is built upon the success of his novels and short stories set in the Potteries, an area of north Staffordshire that he recreated as the 'Five Towns'. 'Anna of the Five Towns' and 'The Old Wives' Tale' show the influence of Flaubert, Maupassant and Balzac as Bennett describes provincial life in great detail. Arnold Bennett is an important link between the English novel and European realism. He wrote several plays and lighter works such as 'The Grand Babylon Hotel' and 'The Card'. Arnold Bennett died in 1931.

This is a fabulous, logical, rational guidebook for improving one's life and getting rid of addictive behavior. The chapters are organized according to a 4-Point Program called SMART Recovery®, which has a lot of information online. This handbook puts most of the fundamental information in one place, in a logical order. After an intro, there are chapters on Motivation, Dealing with Urges and Cravings, addressing unhelpful thinking (REBT/CBT), and creating a life with purpose.

The Handbook is also a workbook, with exercises on Cost Benefit Analysis of one's problematic behavior, creating a Change Plan, taking a look at one's Values, etc. These exercises help the individual see a bigger picture so they can move life along to be more aligned with their chosen values.

The SMART Handbook is based on scientific research that has been done regarding the Stages of Change, Motivational Interviewing, the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and more. This tantalizing book of photographs, depicting psychotherapists in their offices, emerged from the photographer-author’s awareness of a paradox: he spent long hours interacting with many clients, yet he felt as if he worked in isolation. He composed this unique volume in order to answer this question for himself: what do we, as psychotherapists and analysts, have in common beyond the treatment of clients? Curiosity, combined with the passion for photography, motivated Dr. Zimmermann to produce this enlightening, artistic volume.

As they pose in their respective offices, the “shrinks” provide a glimpse into their own psyches. The sampling includes psychotherapists from well to lesser known and captures them at different stages of their career.

The reader is invited into the sacred space, privy to the diversity of the minds that inhabit these rooms. Each psychotherapist aims to provide a comfortable and safe environment that supports the complex exploration of the psyche, relieves pain and suffering, and encourages psychological growth.

Awesome book of portraits of shrinks!

This is an awesome book of portraits of shrinks. It is a photography book first but also includes texts and interviews and gives an insight into the spaces of therapists (mainly) in NYC. Some famous some less known. It is very nicely put together and a well designed as an object! I would recommend this to a fellow therapist or anyone interested in photographic portraits.

Dr. Zimmerman has compiled a book, both intimate and inspiring, that beautifully illustrates the work of those professionals most often in the background. Though they share a commitment to healing others, his subjects are highly varied in experience, orientation and style. The conceit of photographing subjects in their work space with the accompanying essays, provides the reader with a sense of privilege, a chance to "peek" into the mind of an analyst. Anyone who has been in analysis will understand the voyeuristic pleasure in this. Bravo!

A Paradigm Busting and Helpful Book

Science, including medical science, can only view the physical world through the lens of paradigms (models) because physical reality is so rich and complex. Dr. Thomas Levy has written a paradigm buster book that challenges the osteoporosis-calcium paradigm and the arterosclerosis-cholesterol paradigm. His alternative anti-oxidant/magnesium paradigm has a lot to say for itself.

I respectfully disagree with the first review of this book. The book is not meant to be a shocker or merely a pop book. It is a readable, soundly researched book with many helpful suggestions for those with osteoporosis, arteriosclerosis, and other chronic degenerative diseases and conditions.

I emailed Dr. Levy and asked if he could resolve an inconsistency in the medical literature between those who say that cancer is caused by oxygen deprivation (the Otto Warburg thesis) whereby metabolism switches from oxygen to sugar in contrast with his anti-oxidant thesis. Dr. Levy gave his permission to quote him as follows:

"When the cancer metabolism changes more to sugar, there is always increased oxidative stress inside the cells, and this is always accompanied (caused??) by increased intracellular calcium. Increased antioxidant capacity will always be an effective counter to this, depending on the degree to which it can be increased. Multiple changes occur inside a malignant cell, and it is not clear whether Warburg's observations cause malignancy, result from malignancy, or some combination of the two."

I also asked Dr. Levy about statin drugs (atovastatin calcium). Here was his reply:

"While statins have many undesirable long-term effects, they do appear to have some anti-inflammatory effects, which by themselves are generally desirable for most individuals. The calcium that comes with the atorvastatin will not be a significant counter to this, acutely, but any form of additional calcium intake will have a negative impact on health in the long run. Remember that the lower your cholesterol goes, the greater your chances of cancer--this is very well-established. Any co-administration of calcium over a long period of time will only aggravate this potential."

Especially for women who take calcium supplements to combat bone loss, Dr. Levy points out a different cause of osteoporosis: scurvy or severe vitamin C deficiency. Nonetheless, calcium is potentially dangerously added to many food products (without the balancing effect of magnesium). The result could be calcium overload and the degenerative conditions that result from it.

This is not merely a technical book for medical practitioners. It is should be read by a wide audience. After reading this book it becomes clear that people over 20 years of age should taper down or eliminate as much as possible the consumption of dairy products (e.g., the ice-blended mocha drinks from their local coffee house). I wholly recommend this book for those where heart and arterial disease, cancer, osteoporosis, and dental disease runs in the family. Thank you Dr. Levy for writing this book.

a downside to an over-prescribed supplement

Dr. Thomas Levy’s latest hard-hitting book “Death by Calcium” will never be a best-seller in New Zealand and Fontera* could even go so far as to block any major retail book chain from having copies on their shelves. This book is a masterful disclosure of fully referenced scientific facts exposing the hitherto hidden dangers of excessive dietary and supplementary calcium. Whilst many (even including some doctors) now understand that calcium cannot get into or stay in bone without other minerals such as magnesium and boron, little is known about what actually happens with the all-too-frequent increased calcium levels following standard health department and medical recommendations. Levy does not mince words and this book is a shocker exposing as it does widespread multi-system adverse health effects when a body is chronically overloaded with unusable calcium. Every health professional should read it as standard health and dietary recommendations are causing widespread health problems.

I want to share what I wrote on my blog regarding Dr. Levy and this book. This book is about much more than just calcium, it is for ultimate health. Dr. Levy also provides the science behind his new revelations regarding calcium.

Dr. Levy is blowing the whistle on excess calcium from dairy and supplementation in his book Death By Calcium. Dr. Levy is a cardiologist and the world's leading Vitamin C expert. Dr Levy states that calcium is essential to our health, but outside of the bones, we only need a small amount. Dr. Levy warns that if we get beyond the small amount neeeded, excess calcium starts to deposit in our tissues and in our cells and this is how cells become malignant. Excess calcium has toxic effects and shortens the lifespan. Calcium has long been regarded as something that is good for us without qualification and in the last five years new studies have proven it is not as good for us as we have been led to believe.

But I Love My Milk !!!

We have been taught all our lives to drink milk and we associate it with great health. We have been duped AGAIN. Why? Always for the same reason, follow the money. Dr. Levy advises to enjoy a little cheese, yogurt and sour cream sparingly.

Dr. Levy does feel there are health benefits from drinking milk that has no antibiotics or hormones and has been minimally changed but not to drink as a regular beverage. Dr. Levy advises NOT to supplement with calcium.

About the Author
Russ James lives at home with his wife and his only son, Adam. He is a retired policeman, where he worked as a sergeant for over 32 years. Among his accomplishments he’s a 2nd degree black belt in Japanese style karate, a PADI certified SCUBA diver, and a licensed airplane pilot. He also became well known in the field of combat handgunnery. Using all of these he was the first officer in his department to teach defensive tactics, a police search & rescue diver, an aerial photographer, weapons armorer and firearms instructor. Early on in his police career he accepted an over-time position as the “Animal Control” officer. This proved to be the most challenging of all. With the help of his wife, they managed to place countless unwanted pets in homes of need. Most friends and neighbors were reluctant to open their doors. But once they got in, an unwanted pet and sometimes two, became a family member. Competing around the world in countries such as Venezuela, Australia, and South Africa, in the mid 1980's he scored among the top competitors in the shooting field of IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation). He was designated to be the United States Team Captain among an All-Star list of shooting notables in the USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Confederation). Some of those included Rob Leatham, Doug Koenig, and Jerry Barnhardt, and Mike Plaxco, all National & World Champions. http://www.vtxpress.com/instructor.htm His wife, Ms Deborah James and he were married in 1978. They were friends since 1974, when they first fell in love with the undersea world, and each other. Ms James went on to become a champion in her own right. She captured four USPSA/IPSC National Championship titles, in a row. Along the way she also won two World IPSC Championship titles. She retired in 1992 a champion, and never lost a match. She is a retired teacher and keeps busy in the yard, plays tennis and golf’s with friends. Russ is an NRA instructor who teaches that, “Shooting can be fun”. He currently competes in the sport of “Cowboy Action Shooting” and spends most of his time at the cabin with family and friends. He goes to the seashore and fishes now and again, but does not keep his catch. He no longer SCUBA dives or traps lobsters.

A Comic strip for Parrotheads

I received my copy in the mail today and have enjoyed each page. This comic strip was written with the Jimmy Buffett fans in mind. the surfpirate (Bob Haslett) just nailed every aspect of a Jimmy Buffett concert experience from the tailgates, music, but most importantly the crazy fun loving life we all love to live. The folks over on the Buffettnews web site will get a lot of the strips jokes and those new to the BN Critters will love learning the inside jokes. I cannot recommend this book enough, it truly was a labor of love and a gift to all the parrotheads out there.

A beautiful book

This first effort from the twisted mind of The Surf Pirate will be the must have gift for parrotheads this Christmas. My understanding is that the RNC wants this pulled because of the 2016 election. It seems they feel it's just a glorification of Duckett Duck in advance of his obvious run for president. Be sure to look for your "I heart Sha-boobies" bracelets now that the PA Supreme Court has restored sanity to local school districts. Can't wait to read the further adventures of the BN Critters and their fight against all things Meglaritamart, Inc.

Great Book

I was expecting the book to be just the strips, it also included comments from the author explaining most of the scripts which were very helpful and made the book even more enjoyable. I especially like the little mouse that adds a comment in the scripts. Large big book also, well worth the money.

I acknowledge that although the Marian questions deserve answers, the attempt to provide the answers is problematic; and, for those whose minds are already made up, the attempt is likely futile. I therefore ask you to examine the Sacred Scriptures with an open mind, to see them through another person's eyes, and to examine the views of people you might normally discard out of hand. If you do this, even if you remain unconvinced, you will find the process spiritually rewarding.

About the Author
Kristofer Carlson grew up at the foot of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado. During his career with the United States Air Force, he completed four college degrees, including a graduate degree in Management Information Systems. Upon retirement he took a position with the American Lutheran Theological Seminary, where he assisted the President in running the seminary, writing articles for their magazine and assorted theological position papers. He also worked as the parliamentarian with The American Association of Lutheran Church. During his tenure, he began the research that led to the book Why Mary Matters. After leaving that position he was eventually Chrismated into the Eastern Orthodox Church. He currently attends Dormition of the Theotokos Orthodox Church in Norfolk, Virginia.
