About the Author
At Least We Lived is the first book by Emma Oxford, Max and Audrey’s elder daughter, and it is based on her parents’ remarkable collection of letters and journals. Emma began the book when she lived recently in Hong Kong, and she supplemented her parents’ eyewitness accounts of life in Asia with her own extensive research in the region. Emma grew up in Malaysia and England, and graduated from Oxford University. She has spent her career working in both the UK and the US, and now lives in Washington DC.

History, Memoir,Romance

The author, Emma Oxford, was very fortunate to discover a large cache of descriptive,, passionate, and charming letters and journals left by her parents, Max and Audrey. These letters provide the core of the romance and history in this extraordinary personal account of World War II in China . Interwoven with the letters,are well researched history, geography and commentary by the author.

Handsome Max was an Aviator who made a dangerous escape from Hong Kong on Christmas Day as the Japanese were taking over Hong Kong.

Flame haired Audrey decided to take a job with The British in China to escape the horrors of the blitz, and the deprivations of rationing in England. They met in Chung King in a time and place where the privileges of the British Empire still existed. There were clubs, house parties, holidays and plentiful food and drink; in stark contrast to war time Britain..at least for a while.

Read this book with a map at hand unless you are extremely familiar with the geography of Asia, and China in particular.

My favorite image from the book is the arrival of Audrey who has come to meet Max after a long separation. She lands in a flying boat belonging to the Maharajah of Jaipur!

This wonderful, well written book reveals how a personal history of a time and place can illuminate our understanding of the history we thought we knew.

Love and Courage

At Least We Lived, while nonfiction, could be a movie as it has all the elements - intrigue, love, the theme of world chaos versus personal order, and more, as it traces the life of a British couple during WW2. Told by a daughter of the couple, Max and Audrey Oxford, it is also a poignant ode to the author's parents.

I found myself thinking about the leaps of courage people took during WW2. As a 26 year old, Audrey left a sheltered life in England in 1943 to travel to Chungking - no direct flights, no direct transportation at all and very aware that the North African campaign was in full swing. Max had escaped from Hong Kong in 1941 with help from the Chinese only to find his way overland to Chungking . Simultaneously living through WW2 and the Chinese civil war, Audrey and Max tried to keep a sense of the old order in their lives. Their lives were filled with daily social activities and work. Chaos and order.

I found the book a tale of courage, love and commitment. It is an adventure story that touches upon the transformative growth of air travel for the Asian region. It touches on the fact that WW2 was only the beginning of regional conflicts in Asia. The book is a welcome addition to the library of people interested in WW2 and China.

Non-fiction at its best!

This is an intoxicating cocktail of adventure and romance, quest and memoir with more than a sprinkle of well-researched geography, history and delicious period features thrown in.

I was entranced from the first sentence describing an intrepid young woman, one of the two main protagonists, packing her trunk in preparation for a lone, war-time journey across half the world in May 1943, sprinkling her 'winter woollens' with mothballs and tucking 'hand-stitched sachets of fragrant lavender' among her blouses and dresses.

We follow her progress to take up a post in the war-time capital of China where where she meet, falls in love with and marries a glamorous RAF intelligence officer. His own escape from Hong Kong the day (25th December 1941) it fell to the Japanese, is a beautifully recounted and heart-stopping adventure in itself.

About the Author
Dr. Vuong is a board-certified general surgeon who did his surgical training in the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX. He is currently the director of Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Lovelace Health Systems in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Vuong’s no-nonsense approach to health and wellness has made him a popular speaker at patient conferences, and he is featured in TLC’s 2013 reality television show “900 Pound Man: Race Against Time.” He has written multiple patient education books that are also available on Amazon.

One of the best -- if not the best -- of all the bariatric surgery guides

Before and after my bariatric surgery I bought a lot of guides. I haven't reviewed some because I could find nothing good to say about them, but this is one of the best -- if not THE best.

The difference, I believe, lies in Dr Duc Vuong's infectious enthusiasm for good food.

Food is what preoccupies us before bariatric surgery -- and it sure as shootin' is on our minds after bariatric surgery.

The point is to make a new start, and to dump the bad old ways.

This is what Dr Vuong teaches us to do.

As a Vietnamese, and obviously a very gifted home cook as well as a fine surgeon, he is familiar with cooking high-protein meals using the best fish and seafood -- and I cannot imagine my post-operation diet without fish and seafood. It really is a key ingredient, full of protein, yet light on the bad stuff.

His overall emphasis on quality fresh food strikes a real chord with me. I believe that many overweight people -- well, me for a start -- do not think too much about food, but rather, too little, cramming processed junk into our mouths without considering or even tasting what we are devouring.

To appreciate food -- and understand what it contains -- is the first step on the road to health.

This is not to say that this excellent book contains nothing but recipes, far from it. But the advice on eating is so good, and so important, that I heartily recommend this book for that alone.

At 70lbs down, I have to thank Dr Vuong for writing this.

A guide book for any gastric sleeve patient

As a weight loss surgeon, I am always looking out for educational materials for my patients. These materials must be easy to read, factual, and provide tips. This book does all of that.
Easy to read, the book takes the patient in the journey from the operating room to the lifestyle of the fastest growing weight loss operation.
The book provides some easy rules for the patient to follow- all of which I agree with. It also provides added inspiration for success.
I have ordered copies of this book for my patients who undergo this operation

Different from all the other books written on the sleeve

I have read about half of this book so far and it is excellent. In my research, I have read many books on WLS and this one is really the first that has offered some excellent practical advice for patients. Most of these books are all about the surgery but this book really hits home with life applicable advice on change. I highly recommend it based on what I have read so far!

About the Author
Rusty Barnes grew up in rural north­ern Appalachia. He received his B.A. from Mans­field Uni­ver­sity of Penn­syl­va­nia and his M.F.A. from Emer­son Col­lege. His fic­tion, poetry and non-fiction have appeared in over two hun­dred jour­nals and antholo­gies. After edit­ing fic­tion for the Bea­con Street Review (now Redi­vider) and Zoetrope All-Story Extra, he co-founded Night Train, a lit­er­ary jour­nal which was fea­tured in the Boston Globe, The New York Times, and on National Pub­lic Radio, end­ing its ten-year-run in Feb­ru­ary 2012. Sun­ny­out­side Press pub­lished two col­lec­tions of fic­tion, Break­ing it Down and Mostly Red­neck. MiPOe­sias pub­lished two chap­books of poetry, Red­neck Poems and Broke. Not Ariel, but not Caliban either--by a long shot

When you get this excellent book, turn to the appreciations on the back cover. They are very good assessments of the sensuous fulfillment of conjugal love, intimate sex, and as well the the violent belligerence of friends and female demon incarnations. The "I" in these poems likes bullies and deceivers who confront him. Before and after the fights, these companions and the speaker can appreciate the mystery in water flowing under a bridge, the hours in a woman's arms, or a Ridgerunner's moon. See "Boy with Gasoline, "Hollywood Appalachian Noir.. "Ex Boyfriend Checks in on Saturday night" is one of the best realized, authentically colloquial poems, and the woman / book analogy has echoes only a Ridgerunner-poet could develop. No money, no insulation from the violent, and no shame--is this Caliban? No way. Barnes can do way more than curse, although in "Lilith," he considers himself cursed. About the Author
Dare Wright (1914-2001) was a fashion model and photographer based in New York City. In 1957, she used her childhood doll Edith and two teddy bears as the subjects of her first book The Lonely Doll. The combination of mesmerizing black and white photographs and simple, eloquent text made the book an immediate success and earned it a place on The New York Times Best Seller list along with Dare Wright’s next Lonely Doll book, Holiday For Edith And The Bears. Edith And Little Bear Lend A Hand is the eighth book in the series featuring Edith, Little Bear and Mr. Bear. Originally published in 1972, it was photographed in Dare’s apartment, on the streets of New York City and on the Hudson River where she captured her bittersweet image of the World Trade Center towers before they’d been completed. All of the photographs in this book have been reproduced from Dare Wright’s original negatives that she developed in the tiny darkroom of her apartment.

I stumbled on this book for the first time in many years.

It is just as beautiful and creepy and evocative and lonely and charming as you remember it.

And this is a large-format book in which the quality of the photography really shines.

This is another book in the Edith series by Dare Wright and my favorite because of the environmental message. Edith and Little Bear set out to clean up New York City to convince Mr. Bear that staying in the city is okay. Great story, great photos, a delight.

Dare Wright, Edith and Little Bear Lend a Hand (Random House, 1972)

Mr. Bear, Edith, and Little Bear live in a thinly-disguised Manhattan. Mr. Bear is not happy with the dirt and stink of the city, so he hatches a plan: move to the country, where things are cleaner. Edith and Little Bear aren't too happy with this idea, to say the least, so they decide that if they clean up the city, Mr. Bear will let them stay.

Like most of the Lonely Doll books, Edith and Little Bear Lend a Hand is somewhat transparent in its motivation, but its heart's in the right place. And turning the attentions of the readers away from the interpersonal relationships among the admittedly odd family and towards outside influences for a change is refreshing. Most of all, Edith and Little Bear Lend a Hand, unlike most save-the-earth style juvenile storylines, is an eminently believable one; Edith and Little Bear do, in this book, about as much as real dedicated children would be able to do, instead of performing superhuman tasks.

My favorite Lonely Doll book, even if you do know that things, as always, are destined not to end well. (If you've already read Edith and Midnight, you know why.) *** ?

But he slowly comes to see his life as a terrible, huge deception which had hidden life and death. As he lays dying, his lifelong friends think of the promotions that may come their way, and his wife began to wish he would die, but she didn't want him to die because then his salary would cease. He has always avoided human connection, but through the tender ministrations of a peasant he comes to recognize the mesh of falsity in which he's lived. I stand amazed...

There are so many levels upon which this story can be read, yet they are woven so inextricably into this masterpiece that the complexity is staggering. The premise sounds simple: a man who is about to die realizes he has never fully lived. We've all heard this before--in fact, Hollywood likes to drum such messages into our heads on a regular basis. But rarely, if ever, is it portrayed with the exquisite mastery which Tolstoy employed upon writing "The Death of Ivan Ilyich".
Paradoxically, this story is just as much about the life of Ivan Ilyich as it is about his death. This is in order to fully appreciate who he is and the man he has made of himself before disaster strikes. It is also to highlight both the tragic deterioration of his life and the gradual enlightenment of his inmost soul.
In portraying Ivan Ilyich's character, Tolstoy's subtle but inexorable condemnation is devastating. Not a detail is gratuitous: every point further serves to illustrate what is essentially a life without ideals and without purpose. Yet the author does not beat us over the head with this, rather than allowing the clear and unembellished facts to speak for themselves. And the way Tolstoy knew exactly which facts to accentuate creates a psychological depth which is unparalleled.
Many seem to be under the impression that Ivan Ilyich was some sort of villain, and that the story is a warning against corruption and bad behavior. My personal view is that Ivan Ilyich is no worse--although no better--than many people. Perhaps he is of a slightly lesser moral calibre than most, but that does not make him completely evil. To believe that he is evil is to miss the whole point, for this story was meant to be universal, to depict a reality which exists for us all. This is obvious from the way the story begins, with Ivan Ilyich's friends' and relatives' reactions to his death. Like him, they see death as something that can never happen to them, and like him they lead lives which are shallow and superficial in an attempt to avoid the unpleasant realities of life. By the time he dies, Ivan Ilyich has risen above these people by at last coming to the realization of the worthlessness of his life. This has elevated him above the common man, who avoids the reality of death and the effort it takes to make life worthwhile. In Tolstoy's own words, "Ivan Ilyich's life had been...most ordinary and therefore most terrible."
Therein lies the impact of this story: Ivan Ilyich is Everyman, and the message he represents is applicable at every moment in our lives.

A small sharp pain that won't go away...

This book changed my life. No kidding. After reading it, I realized I was trapped in a loveless marriage, slave to a meaningless job, and listing towards a dark oblivion. In other words, I was your average middle-class, middle-aged married white guy. This book is a terrifying wake-up call to such guys--and I suppose to their female counterparts--to the life-not-well-lived, alas, the path most-taken.

The premise is simple. A solid career guy with all the trappings of `success'--secure job, nice house, presentable wife--lifts his arm one day and feels something go `twang' inside him. No big deal, he thinks. Probably tweaked a muscle or something. Except the little pain doesn't go away. Its not ever going away. It's a message--a message of mortality. The Grim Reaper is at the door. Time's up.

Now this is bad enough news, for sure. But that's only the beginning of this novel of existential horror. For as our hero lies a-dying he sees the life around him--the carefully tended garden of his years--as if for the first time. That is, he sees how bitter, fraudulent, and full of decay and vermin it truly is. From his fair-weather friends and business associates to his vain and self-centered wife who fritters about the inconvenience attendant upon her husband's impending death as if it were a personal affront and the greatest of injustices--to her, *The Death of Ivan Ilych* offers a bedside view of the cruel absurdity of the inhuman comedy. For as the protagonist lies suffering on his deathbed and reviews his life and how it has--and hasn't--added up, he endures a torment that is almost Christ-like in its intensity and resulting in a revelation as immense in its profundity. But whether one of heaven or hell, truth or pacifying illusion is up to each reader to decide.

Said to be the result of Tolstoy's own middle-aged spiritual crisis, *The Death of Ivan Ilych* manages to say in a scant 100 pages what most novels don't begin to say in 500. Timeless and archetypal, this novel reads with the power of a myth--a cautionary myth to wake up this very moment and begin to live an authentic life before it's too late.

Because at any moment, it may suddenly be too late.

I am so sorry only 9 other people have reviewed this book for Amazon. If it were up to me, I'd place a copy in every hotel and motel room in America, right next to Gideon. I realize that some books just hit us the right way at certain times in our lives, and I once had a hard time trying to persuade 18- and 19-year-olds to appreciate this one. But when I was around 30, I read the title novella, and it changed my life by changing my outlook on life and enabling me to make some decisions I'd never have taken seriously if I hadn't read it.
But I don't want to scare you off. Tolstoy is perfectly accessible, the title character's dilemma is heartrending (the title gives you a clue), the characters universal, and the effect upon closing the cover after the last page indelible. If one person reads it after reading these 10 reviews, I'll be happy.

About the Author
Barry Richard Donadio was a First Responder to the TWA Flight 800 crash on July 17th 1996. He had a long distinguished Military career. After the Military, he served for 10 years in the United States Government. A standout account

A standout addition to the literature on TWA 800, standing-out because it does NOT take a particular point of view. A firsthand account without prejudice, simply describing a unique perch undescribed until now. Draw your own conclusions.

Anyone compelled to criticize the editing is unable to read the passion between the lines, has never been saved by a first responder, doesn’t have military or first responders in the family, or for that matter, has never watched an episode of Dragnet (“Just the facts, Ma’am...”).

For the rest of us, the compassion and decency come through loud and clear.

Not What I Expected

I applaud Donadio for being a first responder, but this book leaves a lot to be desired. Given the title reference to TWA 800, I expected him to be at the crash site pulling wreckage and crash victims from the waters. Nope. He was on shore twiddling his thumbs and going for donuts. No reflections on Mr. Donadio---He was doing as directed. But first responding? Not what I expected.

Don't waste your time or money on this one

The book was written by someone who was a first responder, and it is the most poorly written thing I’ve seen since I subbed and had students who were in the bottom of their class and working below grade level. It was obvious the writer self-published and had no one proof it first. It was full of misspellings and misplaced punctuation. And it wasn’t difficult punctuation. He put commas right in the middle of most of his sentences for no reason whatsoever. Sometimes he had a space both before and after the commas, in several places.

While the book (and title) purports to be a first-person account of what occurred directly after the plane went down, the first 7 chapters of the book never even mentioned it. They were just background on the writer’s work experience. The small part that actually describes what he saw could have been typewritten in 12 point font on one sheet of paper. Two thumbs down on this one. If you come across this book, don’t waste your money or your time

The theme is change. It's how we react to change, with humor or despair, that takes our measure. From the bare end of the Depression to the built-in obsolescence of today, Gordon's essays find laughter in the face of transformations that affect us all.
 
In her younger days, Gordon was a noted media personality. For many years she wrote Singlephile, a column about life as a single, while hosting and producing radio and television shows. Most notable was Pulse!, a daily, one-hour call-in show featuring nationally acclaimed guests. It aired throughout South Florida and the Caribbean and was nominated for a Peabody award. She also wrote hundreds of articles for regional and national periodicals.
 
Today, Gordon is an old fart living on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River in Fort Myers, Florida.

About the Author
Marsha Gordon has played many roles. Orphan and spoiled brat. Wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandma. Actress and media personality. World traveler and international tour director. Businesswoman and writer. And self-described old fart. Her writing credits include a four-year run of a weekly newspaper column called Singlephile, for the newly single. She was selected from more than a thousand applicants to write the Miami edition of Changing Homes, a quarterly national magazine. Hundreds of Gordon’s articles, book and theater reviews have been published from New England to California. Gordon acted with the American Theater Wing on Public Radio’s WNYC in New York City. She went on to host and produce a number of radio and television shows, notably Pulse!, a daily, hour-long, live call-in TV show featuring nationally acclaimed actors, musicians, writers and politicians. Nominated for a Peabody award, Pulse! aired in South Florida and on radio stations throughout the Caribbean. For her work on Pulse!, Gordon received an award from Tele-Communications cable station. Named Outstanding Woman of the Year by the Zonta organization, she was also recognized by United Way for her outstanding achievements toward their goal. She ran for Mayor of Key West and was given the Key to the City, even though she lost the election. Numerous additional awards paper her office walls. Gordon is an enthusiastic and engaging speaker who enjoys traveling and meeting new people. She tells of her adventures from New England to New Orleans, from Alaska to Antarctica, from Russia to Machu Picchu, through the Panama Canal and around Cape Horn. With an eye for the unusual, Gordon once landed on a U.S. aircraft carrier and spent the day aboard, finally lifting off into a blazing sunset in the company of military pilots. From her armchair, Gordon’s reminiscences turn disaster into comedy. She raises everyday concerns to a higher level, taking readers along for a laugh – and a tear or two. Unusual, fun and thoughtful - This is a book to savor

I love this book. I like to read it a little at a time. I read it with my tea when I get up in the morning or if I can't sleep at night. It is a collection of short stories. Most appear to be about the author's life. There are so many different snippets. It is like eating bon bons. I never know where the next story will take me. Last nights was about Santeria. One was about being stuck on Alligator Alley for almost a day and linking up with kind groupies who had come to hear a band the author didn't know. There is subtle humor and humor that has me laughing out loud. I marvel at her openness to life. The only thing I don't like, is that one day this book will end and it will leave a gap in my life until I find something new to fill it.

Writings of a Sage

The book is delightful. Ms. Gordon's economic way with words is a gift. She is witty and has a remarkable turn of the phrase. Some stories brought me joy. Some stories brought a tear to my eye. Some stories made me laugh. Ms. Gordon's book touched me and brought me back to earlier times. It is a reverie that I am most grateful for. Changing Times--Ramblings of an Old Fart--Essays on changing times yes! Ramblings? I don't think so. Somehow I cannot imagine Ms. Gordon as an "Old Fart." I see her as a Sage.

Really enjoyed this

This book is full of clever, incisive essays covering myriad aspects of our fast-changing world. Gordon , a self-proclaimed "old fart," certainly bemoans the passing of some of our most treasured pastimes, technologies and institutions while embracing new experiences. She shares a great deal of her personal journey, and it is a pleasure to travel with her to such outposts as Antarctica, Key West, New Orleans and more. The short essays and large print make this an easy take along read.

Black Church is the Second Great Book by author Michael "Mickman" Gourdine

Michael "Mickman" Gourdine has applied the same intense truthfulness of his soul to how he sees the topics of his books. Chili Pimping in Atlantic City, his first book was as well written as is Black Church. Both books grip your psyche that drives you on to reading them from beginning to end. You are then left with an indelible memory of the authors message. I recommend these heart renching stories to all avid readers. You will come away with an enlightened perspective of a bright author and observer of the human condition.

Michael Gourdine is an extraordinary writer that keeps the reader wanting more.The book is so exciting, with drama, danger and a real life adventure that goes on in today's world. Fast easy read

Answered many questions I had, and confirmed I was going down the right road with my marketing, and gave me helpful advice of how to better serve my clients. It did duplicate some information a few times, but hey if you didn't catch it the first go round then you'll get it the second time. I really recomend this book to anyone in the wedding industry.

If you've never been involved with an LGBTQ wedding, but you're looking to serve the community then you need this book. I would highly recommend it not just to wedding vendors, but all businesses in a service industry.
