The stories of the "Unknown Wars of Asia, Africa and The Americas" were cataclysmic and bloody events that took the lives of millions and impact our world to this day. Yet, most of these wars are hardly mentioned in articles or even textbooks. Among some of the wars covered are: - The wars that involved the Great Wall of China over its' 1,865 year history as a defensive barrier. - The longest war in history which was the 1,049 year long Vietnamese War of Independence from China and the lessons that should have kept France and the US out of Indo-China. - The wars of the Khmer Empire (802 – 1431) and Jayavarman VII who emerged as an unlikely hero in a time of crises in 1177 to become the greatest king of the Angkor era. - The Jewish Bar Kokhba Revolt (132 – 136) that caused the Emperor Hadrian to cover up the massacre of two veteran Roman Legions and the truth about how close the revolt came to succeeding. The Jewish War from 66 – 73 AD is also covered in a preceding chapter. - The wars of the Spanish Conquistadors to conquer the American Southeast and Southwest in the sixteenth century and the Native American apocalypse in North America that followed. - The Cherokee Wars that came very close to wiping out the colony of South Carolina. - The wars of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade that took the lives of more than 12 million Africans and the slave revolts of the Caribbean and South America. - The Taiping Rebellion (1851 – 1871) that was caused by a Confucian scholar who misunderstood a poorly translated gospel tract and started a rebellion that led to over 30 million deaths. - The 74 year Mongol conquest of China and disasters in Syria, Japan, Vietnam, and Java that led to the breakup of the Mongol Empire. - Before the Holocaust of World War II, there was a Christian holocaust in Germany and Bohemia during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) that caused more than 8 million deaths mostly from genocide being committed by both Catholics and Protestants. - England’s Pirate Wars – The French Conquest of Indo-China 1857 – 1884 - The future wars that half of the world’s population of Jews, Christians, and Muslims are expecting in the near future. Great Perspective and Insight
By Ken Hanson
While many of us history buffs are familiar with the "great wars", the author of "Unknown Wars" does a terrific job of filling in the spaces in between, with conflicts that in many cases were highly influential in the direction and outcome of history.
While some of the chapters stand alone with single wars, others tie together to form historical arcs, particularly with the wars and conflicts of China and the surrounding world.
What is clear throughout is the absolute, repeated savagery of the human race. The non-stop barbarity in the pursuit of power, territory, religious purity and wealth is numbing.
One highlight for me was the prominent position of women in leading the wars of independence in what is today Vietnam. Another was the author's interesting descriptions of tactics, such as Asian siege technology, and methods to trap and destroy fleets of ships in river battles.
I found very interesting the scale of armies and wars in and around China, including Mongolia, . A thousand years ago while Europe fielded armies in the 10's of thousands, Chinese wars brought hundreds of thousands to the battlefield. Millions died in China fighting the wars, building and maintaining the Great Wall. It was not until World War I that European conflicts reached this scale.
I learned that the 30 Years' War, what Mr. Johnson deems the "Christian Holocaust", wiped out a generation, bled the region white - and ushered in the concept of total war in Europe. I also had not know how many innocents throughout history had taken their own lives in the face of conquest to avoid almost certain rape, mutilation and slaughter, particularly in Asia and Asia Minor.
The conclusion of the book investigates the great war to come. The insight for me was that while many Christians view the prophecies of the Book of Revelation as interesting but somewhat mystical, there is a significant part of the Muslim world with its own very similar end-time story. The difference is that these Muslims, such as those in Iran, that are acting on those end-time beliefs in a violent and calculated way.
Many other stories throughout the book offer important insights into every corner of the world for the last 2,000 years. From the African slave wars to early conflicts with native Americans to Jewish rebellions from Rome, there is something in this book for everyone.

Unknown Wars is fascinating and well written
By Jerry W.
I picked up Unknown Wars from the local book store after reading an article in the paper about it. I really liked this book because it is written with a storytellers flair. I tend to not care for history topics because I get lost in dates and just facts so that I get bored, but unknown Wars is not like that. It tells the stories of these wars and events that I have never heard of in a nice flowing story format. Johnson's writing style really made these incredible stories to come to life for me. I recommend this book to anyone interested in history and loves a good yarn. These stories are bloody and it is just amazing about what humans can do to each other. The stories of how the Cherokees came close to wiping out South Carolina and the stories of the battles fought in the American Southeast and Southwest were fsacinating events I had never heard of before that had me where I just did not want to put the book down. I liked the last chapter the best because it helps to show what is going on in the Middle Easst and how it could all lead to armageddon. I really liked this book. It is history well written and told in a fascinating manor. I give this book a deserved five stars.

Unknown Wars
By J. Lindner
This book held my interest, particularly in the early parts. I learned quite a bit about ancient China and Vietnam, Africa and the Middle East. The Pirate Wars was intriguing as was the accounts of warfare in the American southeast and southwest. But other wars are not so "unknown" as others. Why the Thirty Years' War was included bewildered me. Even the Russo-Japanese is well-known by many scholars of the 20th century. Stephen Johnson obviously did much research while writing this book.
But it is not without major problems. The first has already been touched upon by another reviewer. The proofreading, post-production work was terrible. He uses the wrong form of "there" and the wrong form of "accept" and uses ruble in stead of rubble at least twice. Other misspellings detract from an otherwise well-researched book. It makes an otherwise good book appear amateurish.
But the worst part of this book is the last chapter. This nonsense is common amongst fundamentalists across the globe who seem to be eagerly awaiting end times. History is not about predicting the future, it's about creating a reasonable representation of the past so that the people who lived in the past would recognize what the author recreates. No mainstream publisher would have ever touched a diatribe such as this last chapter without either removing it completely or declining to publish the book, no matter how well-written its earlier parts are. Johnson lost all credibility with this last chapter steeped in speculation and inaccurate reading of scriptures. It sounded like a John Hagee sermon from his Cornerstone Church. How often do people incorrectly predict the end of the world? Well so far they're batting zero. God is not going to destroy Earth, it's right in Genesis.
So if one can tolerate horrible grammar and incorrect usage of the English language, and if one can stomach the absurd Chapter 19, this book is worth a look. One can learn much about little known wars, and some that are not so "unknown," but put it away before you get to Chapter 19, unless you're looking for how to make history into science fiction.
