About the Author
Philip Becnel is the Managing Partner of Dinolt Becnel & Wells Investigative Group LLC, a private investigative firm based in Washington, D.C. He is the author of the books "Introduction to Conducting Private Investigations" and "Principles of Investigative Documentation". He has published several articles in investigative, legal, and popular publications including Time Magazine, Westlaw Journal Employment, and The Corporate Counselor. Philip has served as President of the Private Investigators Association of Virginia, and has taught undergraduate courses in criminal procedure, white collar crime, and criminal investigation. He lectures on a wide variety of investigative topics to the legal community and is frequently interviewed by CNN, U.S. News and World Report, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, and The Baltimore Sun for his expertise and unique perspective. Philip earned his B.A. in Anthropology from George Mason University and his Master's in Criminal Justice from Boston University. He is a licensed private investigator in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Philip lives in Washington D.C. and has two children, Philip and Ava.

The PERFECT guide for beginning professionals

There's a couple of titles out there targeted towards absolute newcomers in the field of private investigation. However, Philip Becnel's book stands tall above the others. Mr. Becnel's book provides an extremely solid foundation for those just entering the profession. Don't let the size fool you--if you are just getting your license or currently in training, this course will make any examinations a breeze.
The book has an excellent format--starting with the nuts and bolts of the profession (just what a PI is and ethics), moves into the basic tools of the profession (interviewing, surveillance, and how to "work" a case) and how to handle documentation properly, then segues into a very good section on the wide variety of cases that an investigator can expect to encounter or specialize in. The beauty of this section is that Mr. Becnel uses examples pulled from his own career (with details changed to protect clients). This allows students to really get a feel for the ups and downs of the profession while also showing how the tools of the profession are used in each case. Finally, Mr. Becnel presents a VERY comprehensive section on the law of private investigation--this is probably the driest section, but this is not a laughing matter--you don't want to risk your license by not knowing the law! Mr. Becnel recognizes this and treats the law with the utmost respect while also presenting it in a "building block" manner, using a particularly good metaphor of a thermometer to explain the relative importance of evidence in various legal proceedings. Other books often interweave the details of the law with other sections, but again, this is such an important part of the profession that it is best presented as a unit unto itself.
One note--Mr. Becnel wrote the book specifically with Virginia's licensing course in mind, so there are some sections (specifically the first chapter) that may not be of use to everyone. That being said, the book on whole is a clear, concise step-by-step approach to entering the profession. Other books may cover more, but if you want to get your feet wet and understand just what you're getting into (the good, the bad, and the ugly), this is the book for you. You'll find that this profession is all about constant education (after all, we're PAID to be perceptive and thorough!), and this book provides a solid foundation for the exciting road ahead should you choose to continue in the profession.
This is NOT a Do It Yourself guide, and for good reason: this is a book for people who are serious about helping others with the skills that are endeavoring to acquire.

Commendable Work

Having recently completed Private Investigator training and subsequently passing the Provincial Licensing exam, I was eager to further my knowledge base via further study. While recognizing this text was written in the U.S. and intended as a training adjunct to the Virginia licensing exam, the content, layout and approach parallels in many ways the material in the course I just completed. For anyone studying for licensing in Canada (and in particular Ontario), it must be born in mind, many of the laws and legalities pertaining to Private Investigative work in the U.S. often vary substantially from those here in Canada. Nonetheless, from a purely investigative methodologies approach (i.e. elements of interviewing and interrogation, surveillance, documentation and note taking, etc.) there is much useful information to be gleaned from this short work. While not classed as a comprehensive and in depth treatise on the field of investigation, I feel Mr. Becnel has done an outstanding job of encompassing the main elements of the profession and providing sufficient detail to warrant a place for this text on any investigators bookshelf.

Great companion to the course.

This is a great companion to the course, I actually bought and read it prior to taking the course, knowing it was geared toward satisfying the requirements of the course AND written by a well-known local PI. Going into the course, I felt I was well-prepared and there were no surprises. Thanks Phil!
