About the Author
Melissa R. Pandolf is the adoptive mom to four biological Russian siblings, two of whom have special needs. She recently celebrated her twentieth year serving in the United States military, and is currently serving in the Air National Guard. She has an AAS degree in financial management, as well as an associate degree in allied health services, from the Community College of the Air Force. She lives in Patchogue, Long Island, with her husband, four children, and the family dog. Her life, as crazy and hectic as it is, is perfect, and she wouldn't have it any other way.

Beautiful Story!

The Journey for Mama's Babies is a heartwarming memoir of a very brave couple's amazing journey through the Russian adoption world. It is a tender and emotional portrayal of the long road the Pandolfs traveled and the many obstacles they overcame with grace and humility in order to keep their family together. It is a touching and well written story. I highly recommend this book!

Truly one of a kind Inspirational Story!

This story is truly an inspiration to all parents, and not just the adoptive parent. Although this book is like no other book I have read relating to adoption. This story shares the side of adoption that many parents are not comfortable with speaking about..It is real life and you can feel the emotion of all Melissa and Doug go through on their Journey to bring home their 4 beautiful children. Melissa deals with many issues that she was not comfortable with sharing as she has everything she ever wanted. She wasn't sure how her depression would affect her military career and her family in the future. I can't wait to read the next book to see how she managed to go on when life seemed to be battling against her and her family. XOXO

An truely inspirational story! This book is not just about adoption but about a strong family core, communication within a relationship and family, and determination! It was hard to put the book down once I picked it up. An easy ready with a great a message! Different levels of emotion throughout the book but for the author it was her drive to do whatever it took to become a mother that inspired me the most! Strongly recommend this read!

I love this interpretation of Christmas for my big kid! The explanation is presented in an exciting and uplifting manner. My son has many questions again this year, and said he'd like to discuss it with us "after Christmas." I enjoyed this book myself. It will be a great way to start the conversation when he's truly ready!

This book is a gift of truth!
As someone with imaginative, growing children; I struggled with how to share the truth about Santa with out ruining the magic for them.
"Santa" offered my growing children interesting facts to hold onto and entrust them with his secret.
My oldest child read "Santa" two Christmases ago and was very active in encouraging the magic of Christmas with his younger siblings.
My second child read the book this year and is also excited about graduating into upholding the magic of the Christmas season to her younger sister. The two have joined the Santa club and still share the joy of Christmas and Santa with a healthy respect of what the season brings.
Thank you to the author who obviously has a heart for letting children be children and a motto of helping them grow!
It has been a long time coming that someone recognized the dilemma that so many parents have faced when their creative and imaginative children ask, with hope in their eyes, "Is Santa real?"

Even knowing the author personally didn't prepare me for the knock out prose and sheer honesty of the horror this family went through and the love of life and each other that they found at the end

Honest and Moving

The author's honesty and clarity about her family's true life events, the deep love, sorrow, constant hope and equal disappointment are captured so well in this highly readable tragedy of one child's drug addiction. Fortunately, it is also a story of triumph over tragedy because of Lynne’s and Stu’s commitment to protect and love Brady without fail.

The author's prose and conversational style – her thoughtful way of telling her family’s story – really draws the reader in. With Lynne’s telling, I felt very involved in so much of the family dynamics, experiencing Lynne’s conflicted life, wanting Jaime to succeed, knowing the likely outcome, and worrying for young Brady’s future.

This tension between knowing that tragedy was ahead and wanting to know how Jaime and Brady will fare in succeeding days, kept me hooked. I found that once I started reading I was drawn in and quickly finished. Although, I never faced the challenges of addiction with my own kids, I found the book to be much broader in its appeal, especially in how parents try their best to make the right decisions for their children when, as most of us know, there is never a perfect answer.

Because the book so immerses the reader in the author’s deeply personal recollections, if you are a parent, the story is deeply “relatable” as it makes a very personal connection, and, while reading, brings to mind one’s own life raising kids, the mistakes, joys and tragedies. The book also reinforced my belief that most parents do their best for their children. Indeed, after raising two kids myself and recalling the many, many challenges, I honestly don't see how, in the context of the real-time events of daily life, Lynne and Stu could have loved Jaime more or done better as parents. And Brady, his gems of wisdom nicely placed to introduce each chapter, is indeed a lucky child to have such great parents.

I highly recommend this book and I am sure many parents will thank Lynne for writing such a touching and totally honest account of her family struggles.

Father of a Heroin Addict who is still alive & in Prison

My wife and I are living Lynne's story. Our daughter is in prison for several felonies to
fund her drug addiction. She gave birth almost 6 years ago to a baby boy, Jaden.
Only to relapse when he was 3 months old. We became guardians & then 3 years ago adopted him.
He is a joy & consumes most of our life now,
Our daughter is still alive and is serving another year of a 4 year sentence .
What happens next is in God's hands,
This book was so real at every level of what we feel & our journey being parents of an addict.
Thank you Lynne for words we read that we relate to and at some level feel we are not on this journey alone.
I read the book in one night after the first chapter.

I give this book a 5 Star rating because all of the recipes are authentic. AS a retired NAVY Chef, I am very familiar with most of the recipes, having used or experienced them. All of the recipes are delicious and nutritious, and although the portions are for 100 servings, the recipes can be easily converted for any amount. I am thrilled with this purchase and I bought both volumes, so that I will never have to purchase any other recipe books.

These 2 books were just what I was looking for.

I moved into a senior citizen mobile home park last year. It's much nicer than you would think, Everyone takes care of their home and the entire place shows pride of ownership, but I digress. Every Friday night at our recreation center, we have rotating teams of volunteers that cook dinner for roughly 75 people. Since I used to cook in the Army and made my living for years cooking for 2000 or more per meal, I soon found myself not only on a team, but leading it. I was able to draw from my years of experience as far as techniques and methods, but found myself lacking with recipes. These 2 books were just the thing I needed. Yes, military cooking has a bad reputation, but I assure you, it's not because of the recipes. It was the cook that didn't care about his finished product that has given Army food a bad rap. Yeah, as with any cookbook, there are a few recipes that are just not all that good, but for the most part, these recipes will produce very tasty results.

Opree Legacy: Vol. 1 Review

The first installment of L. Anna Lenz's OPREE LEGACY kicks off with a prologue that will leave you gasping. Characters, small children, die mercilessly the second you start to care about them. The world in what is looking to be an epic sci-fi series is mythical, desolate, hopeless, and intriguing at the same time. Throughout this novel, I felt dread for the characters for the environments they inhabited, but at the same time, I kinda wanted to check these places out.

And the characters. Damn. That's where Lenz is strongest, crafting characters we instantly feel something for, whether it's compassion or spite or a mixture. And there are A LOT of characters in here. Sometimes it gets confusing with how fast the story progresses, but that's not a huge complaint, because the breakneck speed at which Lenz launches her first title in a series as well as her debut novel is part of what makes the pages almost fly away from turning them so quickly.

However.

There are several occasions this feels like a first novel. Not like that's a bad thing, it is what it is. But it still seems Lenz is trying to discover her voice, the way the delivery goes from describing scenes in one chapter to just exposition dumping in the next. One scene, a flashback setting up a mother-daughter relationship, I felt would have been much stronger if the scene was simply described instead of the characters' thoughts and feelings being spelled out for us. At the same time, this is a first installment in a sci-fi series already chock full of mythos and legend and species and worlds completely unique to this story. For its sheer unique quality alone, this is a series worth reading. I can't wait for the next one. Despite some flaws, I'm hooked, and I believe the series will only get better from here.

The rise to power of one political or religious group of people who begin a systematic oppression of the society at large has always been and continues to be a bottomless pit for writers to spin wonderful life stories based around them. One might even be tempted to ask, why such a bleak and pessimistic outlook of the future? But when the stories coming out of them are all so entertaining, who’s really complaining?

Author L. Anna Lenz introduces such a dystopian world in the book, ‘The Opree Legacy: The Promise’ which has all the trappings of becoming yet another long and successful series. The book follows the lives of three important characters Nathanial, Cyrus and Lilly, all with a fractured past and a spirit that is never steady. Their beloved land, the New Empire City is always under the threat of an attack from a notorious and mythical enemy who go by the name, the Navat. But this fantasy land isn’t as simple as it looks from the outside; there are extreme class distinctions amongst its citizens and there are Gods who are both evil and sneaky. And as it often is with such large centres of power and control, the feared and imaginary threat from outside is pretty dismal when compared to the home grown one, and this is where our lead characters really come into their own as they struggle to find their place in a world that is rapidly changing around them.

What makes this book really good is that it’s not just a clash between the belief structures of the lead characters, but as the book progresses we get to see that it is also a commentary on the social, cultural and political state of affairs of the present world order, the issues in the ‘new world’ juxtaposes the ones in the ‘old world’ perfectly. Obviously as it is the first book in a series, a lot of time and effort has been put to lay the foundation of the world these characters exist in and establish the base for the character’s actions in the books to come. In the end, the author has shown the growing proximity between the characters of Nathanial and Cyrus, providing enough hints of what is to come in the next book.

The book is divided into different parts, each taking the story forward from the point of view of the principal characters. All the characters, whether it is of the young Nathanial or of the rising revolutionary Caleb, have been systematically developed and are presented as real persons and not just as a stereotype. Anna describes each personality in a way that's easy to relate to.
The ease with which Anna writes violent scenes is bound to shock you and churn your blood but also leave the masters at this game with serious competition. That being said, her prose and dialogue writing describes the landscape and emotions of her characters vividly and we also get to visualize better, this foreign world that often resembles our own in its culture and ideology. This is a well written book that has also been edited beautifully, the mix and pace of action and politics, war and personal relationships have been handled brilliantly.

The Opree Legacy: The Promise is a great start and should provide the right amount of entertainment to all science fiction fans. Alternating between telling the story of many individuals as they take their personal journey through difficult times, it also raises many important questions of political and philosophical nature. And any book that makes you think is a clear winner in my eyes!

Kind of good, lots of exposition.

While it is clear that the author is trying to discover their voice, it is also clear that they know where they're going. it's easy to forget that this is a first book when it comes to be that the scenes of destruction are so vivid that I could imagine them happening in front of me. However, there were also other parts where the info dumping made me skip a few ages to return to the action.
Nevertheless, I loved the characters, they were very alive to me (well, until they were dead).
All-in-all, a good read, if in need of a little development.

A good sequel

"Jennyripper", the sequel to "Sin Gorge", features the return of doppelgeist detective John Flicker and the rest of the cast in the shadowy world of Everything Under. Fresh off of his previous case, Flicker is asked by one of the major vampires in the city to investigate a brutal murder that appears to threaten both the regular citizens of Columbus, Ohio, and the denizens of the Under. As he digs deeper into the case and the history of the city itself, Flicker also finds himself digging into his own history, and the answers to his questions may end up being things he never wanted to know. This was a well written, entertaining read, but I would definitely not pick it up without reading the previous book.

Good read and a worthy sequel

Jennyripper is the sequel to Sin Gorge and is another exciting look into Everything Under.
Ron Horsley has taken another step forward in fleshing out his world of Everything Under.
This isn't your average Supernatural Fill-In-The-Blank For Hire book.
This is a well written tale and I recommend it for anyone who enjoys a supernatural thriller filled with unexpected twists and turns.

Q. Brock what inspired you to write Wasted Wood?

A. One rainy day, an image popped into my head of a boy looking down a creepy, damp, overgrown, wooded trail and trying to make a decision. I, myself, loved riding in the expansive woods at Lake Eureka Park. Sometimes on rainy, autumn evenings, I'd hesitate before pedaling into the woods. Though I knew there was nothing in them, my mind would run wild with 'what if' and 'just maybe' scenarios. Who knows, maybe something was lurking behind the tree trunks just out of sight.

Q. Do you have a favorite camping story?

A. We used to camp at my great uncle's and aunt's cabin. The cabin sat next to a lake with a couple of islands. There was a large forest with dozens of trails as well as a huge cow pasture with two more lakes. We'd catch frogs, play capture the flag, tell stories, and swim. My favorite part was waking up on chilly, misty fall mornings to the smell of bacon and eggs being cooked by my Grandpa Eastman.

Q. Favorite camping food?

A. My dad would always get the two of us cans of Dinty Moore stew and we would cook it over the fire. YUM!

Q. You're known for putting things from your life into your stories. Are there any examples of that in Wasted Wood?

A. Yes, quite a few. Should I tell all of them to you? Hmmm, well here are at least a handful of them. The others you'll have to discover on your own.
1. Washington State is where my friend and fellow author, Chris Miller, lives--hence Miller Mile.
2. Hudson was the name that my wife and I chose if our third child would have been a boy.
3. Waverly is the name of our daughter that will be born in November 2013.
4. Coal was the name of one of our cats.
5. I used to run cross country in high school. Go Eureka Hornets!
6. David is my dad's name.
7. Stewart Field is named for my friend Brian.
8. 4:45 is exactly when my dad gets up every day.
9. Moore is the last name of my two amazing neighbors who lived across the street from my childhood home. They were like a third set of grandparents. I still visit Mrs. Moore whenever I visit home.
10. Eureka, E, is my hometown.
11. Eureka is also the home of Ronald Reagan's college, hence Tommy Reagan.

Q. What is your advice for an aspiring writer?

A. Get it (the story) all down. Go from beginning to end, and don't look back. And yes that means, don't worry about spelling, punctuation, or grammar on the first draft. Just get your ideas down and don't get distracted by how it looks or sounds. The biggest key to writing a story is finishing. So many aspiring writers I talk to have never gotten past the first few chapters. They have great ideas, but they don't get the 'complete' story written...ever. The beginning of the writing journey is not the time to perfect your story or even edit. That's later--that's where the fun of revising comes.

Q. Did you always want to be a writer?

A. No and No! Literature and English weren't my better subjects; I was a math, geography, and history guy. There were a few instances where I penned a story or two. My most notable, probably the stories of Zog I wrote in 5th grade for Mrs. Kelso. Those got quite the laugh from my classmates, enough that I continued to tie the stories the rest of the year together, tying them around Zog. But still, I never planned on being a writer. In fact, my advice to students who think they might want to become a writer and even those who don't (so basically all students) is--PAY ATTENTION to your teachers. It will save you a whole lot of time later. You see, I didn't know God was going to call me to be a writer and open this amazing door for me. I wish so much I had paid attention then. I have many more revisions now because of my lack of effort and paying attention in school. I mean, you're there anyway; you might as well make the time worthwhile and pay off later.

Q. Did you read a lot when you were younger?

A. Nope, sadly I avoided reading. I'm not proud of it. In fact, I missed out on a lot of amazing stories. Now I am trying to catch up and consume as many books as I can. There are just so many. So the first book series I read for fun outside of an assignment was the Harry Potter series. My wife (girlfriend at the time) and I raced through the series. Who won, you ask? That's a story for another time. But boy do I wish I would have read so much more when I was younger, instead of wasting my time on Sega Genesis' Sonic the Hedgehog. So yeah, this story (Wasted Wood) is a reflection on some decisions I made when I was younger. No, I never faced a Tree Troll, but I did get too wrapped in video games to obey my parents at times and that lead to consequences.

Thrilling!

Make sure you have plenty of time on your hands when you start reading this book, because you won't put it down until you have finished reading it! IT'S THAT GOOD! I found myself breathless, waiting to see what happens to Hudson and his friends. You won't want to miss out on this thrilling adventure!!

What a great addition to any classroom, teaching students (or your own children) the importance of obedience. Sometimes, we don't always know why our parents give us limitations, but it's always for our good. Hudson found this out the hard way. Also, the importance of friendship is stressed in this book. It is so important who your friends are. .. .. it makes ALL the difference!

Awesome Description! Highly recommended!

I would totally recommend this to one of my friends! I don't want to be cliché or anything, but Wasted Wood literally keeps you at the edge of your seat! Not only that, but it also has a great life lesson intertwined through the story! The AWESOME description paints a vivid picture in your mind! Also there's a hint of humor here and there that makes you chuckle a bit. Like all of his other books that I've read, I honestly don't think Brock Eastman could've written this book any better than he has! I loved it!!!

Great book for my 13 year old son

I loved this short story. It was a easy and gripping read. I read it all in one sitting and when I gave it to my son it was hard to make him stop and go to bed. As a mum I liked the message that choices we make can have consequences we don't foresee and that maybe computer games are not the be all and end all to life. Another great from Brock Eastman - keep them coming!

Big mistake

I heard about a book on NPR called "Salt Sugar Fat - How the Food Giants Hooked Us" and came to Amazon to check it out. The book they were talking about is by Michael Moss and is a #1 New York Times bestseller. It has over 400 pages. This book has barely 50 pages. The "chapters" are 3 or 4 pages each. I'd recommend ordering the real book instead.

The First Half was Good...

I liked the first half as it was filled with cold, hard facts about the food industry and FDA shadiness. However, abruptly after evaluating "mainstream nutrition myths," the author's tone changes as well as sentence structure. Suddenly I felt patronized as I was being instructed about the very obvious basics of nutrition with basic sentence structure. I don't know what happened there.
