About the Author
Paul Brynteson was born and raised in the home of an evangelical/Pentecostal pastor. After completing a doctoral degree, he began a 40-year career (1968-2008) teaching at four universities in South Dakota, Arkansas, Arizona, and Oklahoma, including Oral Roberts University where he was a faculty member, department chair, and dean of a college. At age 45, after 14 years at ORU, he left discouraged and disappointed by what he had seen and experienced in evangelical/fundamentalist settings. Over the next 20 years he engaged in a serious theological journey, which eventually involved leaving his Christian fundamentalism behind and adopting a more progressive, tolerant, and inclusive view of Christianity. This book is the result of that journey. He resides in Colorado with his wife of over 50 years.

easy read and blunt

I think to really appreciate this book a similar background to Mr. Brynteson's is required. Our Reformed Sunday school class read it as a study and although many already shared his views, they seemed to have trouble understanding the lines he was drawing between Conservatives and Progressives. That said, his bluntness still challenged the most liberal in our class to take a closer look at exactly what they believed about the Bible and why.

A must read for anyone struggling with their childhood faith.

A heartfelt, honest retelling of one man's journey to live an examined life. Brynteson shares his story of a "childlike faith" that has matured through the years as he began to question what he had always been told to be true. Taking the reader through his sincere, yet earnest examining of troublesome parts of the Bible, he reminds that this is a book not written by God, but rather by humans attempting to understand God. Not wanting to leave readers feeling empty, Brynteson introduces the faith he has matured into. A must read for anyone who has come from a conservative religious background, who will surely appreciate his stories and celebrate his revitalized faith.
