Free Fall: a memoir of a family surviving the suicide of a loved one and reclaiming life on their own terms, by Amber Lea Easton

"Understanding suffering always helps the energy of compassion to be born." ~ Thich Nhat Hanh In an instant my husband stripped away my identity as wife, stay-at-home mom, and best friend. With his suicide, our world changed forever. He'd been the center of our universe, but then he was gone. Grief is a dark journey, one often tainted with judgment and false perceptions. Add the word 'suicide' to the mix and more complications arise. This memoir, Free Fall, is intended for those who may be facing their own tragedy and feeling alone, hopeless, confused, scared, and misunderstood. Free Fall is the journey of piecing our lives back together—overcoming children's anxiety as we traversed the brutal grief and trauma process, learning to say the words 'widow' and 'single mom' without cringing, surviving the fall out with friends and family who simply couldn't understand our healing process, triumphing over the stigma of 'suicide', forgiving my husband, and finding peace after chaos. Free Fall is for widows, widowers, parents, survivors of suicide, family members or friends of one who mourns. This story is for anyone who needs encouragement that there is another side to grief. There is. We're there now. We're looking back and holding our hands out to you saying, "hang in there, you're not alone, and you'll get here, too."

Heart-wrenching and beautifully written
By Tammy Dennings Maggy
The author tells a heart-wrenching, no holds barred story of how she and her children made it through the unimaginable--the loss of Easton's husband to suicide. It's all there: the questions, the anger, the denial, the despair, and finally the acceptance that life has to go on.

I cried through at least the first half of the book. I put myself in her shoes while reading her words and I just fell apart. I couldn't imagine losing my husband and have to pull myself together in order to take care of my children. If I had to deal with some of the unkind and uncaring things some of the people in her life said to her during the early stages of her grief, I wouldn't have been able to handle it with the grace she portrayed in the book.

The Easton family story is one that offers hope...there is a light at the end of the tunnel after the death of a core member of your family. It shows the grieving process is different for every individual and that's okay. It's as it should be.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered such a loss or knows of anyone who has. If you didn't understand their grief before, you will after reading Free Fall.

very moving!

What a poignantly written account of a terrible tragedy and the path back to life. This book is very moving and written in such a way that you just want to reach out and hug the author and take away all her pain. Although, as a nurse, I have long known some of the inner turmoil families experience with the loss of a loved one, Amber Lea Easton did an incredible job of describing that pain and anguish and made me understand even more. This book is a must read for not only survivors of suicide, but everyone that knows someone who has lost a loved one. Thank you Amber, for sharing something so difficult in an effort to help others.

An Important Book for Anyone Touched by Tragedy
By Book Addict
This book resonated with me in loud powerful shouts. The author and her children lived through a horrific experience, and instead of hiding behind the dark veil of suicide, she comes forward to share their experience in hopes it might help someone else in similar experiences. It's an inspiring story of how a mother and her children managed to continue their lives after suicide. Ms. Easton's husband chose to hang himself, yet he left behind his family to suffer all the consequences that the stigma of suicide leaves over the survivors. The tragedy becomes even worse when those around the victims don't know how to respond and make it worse with inane, inaccurate, and insensitive words. I know because I've suffered through losses as well--suicide, murder, miscarriages, and car accidents--and people just don't know what to say or do. While this book will help and inspire those who have lost someone through suicide, I hope it also stands as a primer for others who know someone who has gone through similar circumstances. I hope they learn that a hug, along with a cup of silence, is the best thing that can be done under such heartbreaking circumstances. Also, mourning and grief do not have anything to do with a calendar. We all move at our own pace. Until you've gone through the exact same thing, you have no idea how long it might take someone to overcome and move forward through the memories and the reality of life afterwards. Let them mourn, let them scream, and most of all, let them do it on their own schedule.

I thank both Ms. Easton and her children for going public with their experience. It's through this shared experience that we can profit and learn from the worst experiences we might ever face. I send them all my respect and love for continued healing.
