Edith ("The Lonely Doll") brings a kitten back from the country, and her friend Little Bear feels very left out as Edith focuses all of her attention on her cuddly new playmate. Little Bear sneaks in for a visit that turns into a disaster when he tries to cut Edith’s tangled hair. When Little Bear gets the measles, too, Edith uses her savings to buy him a puppy. Much to Mr. Bear’s delight, the two agree to share their pets and harmony is restored.

About the Author
Dare Wright (1914-2001) was a fashion model and photographer based in New York City. In 1957, she used her childhood doll Edith and two teddy bears as the subjects of her first book The Lonely Doll. The combination of mesmerizing black and white photographs and simple, eloquent text made the book an immediate success and earned it a place on The New York Times Best Seller list along with Dare Wright’s next Lonely Doll book, Holiday For Edith And The Bears. The Lonely Doll Learns A Lesson is the fourth book in the series featuring Edith, Little Bear and Mr. Bear. Originally published in 1961, it was photographed within the confines of the author’s apartment in New York City. All of the photographs in this book have been reproduced from Dare Wright’s original negatives that she developed in her tiny darkroom.

The Edith Doll and her Bear friends are really alive!?!?

This is just one of ten stories in the Edith series that never ceased to amaze me as a child. The practical side of me knew they were just toys but...how come this "toy" could shut her painted on eyes?...how could this "toy" hold a thermometer in her painted mouth?...and, most of all, how could this "toy" cause me to love her and her bear friends so very much? Every title in the Lonely Doll series is a priceless treasure. Thank you Dare Wright. I will treasure you and your little charges forever in my heart. When I asked the author once, "They really are alive, aren't they?", Ms. Wright said, "Well, you've found us out, haven't you." Read these books and find out for yourselves!

Well who said childhood was always full of lollipop lullabies and gumdrop dreams?

Although I now consider myself a feminist in many ways, I loved this book when I was little and don't think the book is as terrible or harmful to children as some other reviewers have said. In fact, I picked this book many times off the shelf as my bedtime story. When I was little, I thought it was saddening at some parts (Wright's pictures conveyed loneliness very well) but also funny at others (call me strange, but I laughed when Edith got spanked and when the teddy bear wrote "Mr. Bear is a silly old thing" on the mirror).
This book taps into fears that many young children experience, particularly being alone, fear of their parents leaving & never coming back (separation anxiety) and getting in trouble with parents. Some reviewers expressed concerns that the story tells girls to be needy and dependent to get what they want because Edith begs Mr. Bear to stay, telling him that she'll do whatever he wants if he does (or something to that extent). But remember, she is in a state of fear, and many people say "I'll do anything if you...," in moments of desperation. Plus, how many children love exploring "off-limits" rooms of their home as Edith and the little teddy bear do? Also, I agree that spanking is an inappropriate way to discipline, but many children are spanked every day and therefore can relate (I was spanked when I was a child too). Additionally, the photographs are vivid, clear and definitely draw readers into the story. When I was a young child, I thought the doll really was alive.
If you want a story with unusual-yet-beautiful pictures and a little extra "oomph" than some other children's books, I recommend it. And if you really are concerned about whatever Freudian messages might be in the book, you can always talk about the story after reading to your children.

A lesson we have all learned the hard wayEdith and Little Ba

The story centers around Edith and how she has negelected her true friend Little Bear because she has a new kitten to play with. Once she gets the chicken pox and knows how much she misses Little Bear and Kitten is not so much fun. To make friends again Edith buys a Puppy for Bear....
The flow of the images is excellent you become part of the picture and they all come to life. Dare Wright is genuis at her photography and the scences in which she creates.
