California State (1862): The Hidden History of the CSU in San Jose and Beyond, by Michael Harold

The story of how California State devolved into San Jose State and the struggle to restore the school's original heritage, symbols and identity On May 2, 2012, the State of California and the California State University (CSU) missed an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of the California State system of higher education by the California Legislature. But instead of being recognized, this significant anniversary was almost completely ignored by the State of California, the CSU and its founding campus in San Jose. This book explores the reasons for the unfortunate circumstance, starting with the Spanish exploration of the West Coast and a name derived from the literary island of California. The tale of California State unfolds when later, after successive rebellions, the modern State of California was established, and California Legislature created the California State Normal School in 1862. After moving to San Jose in 1871 the original Cal State campus spawned other campuses which became the California State Colleges, and later the CSU. But over the years the founding campus itself gradually devolved from its grand original statewide “California State” identity to its current provincial “San Jose State” name, degrading not only that campus but the entire CSU system. Spanning almost 500 years, this book tells the fascinating story of this devolution and the struggle to restore the original California State together with its history, identity and symbols for the benefit of the State of California, the CSU system, and its founding campus in San Jose.

Author's strong concerns clearly, concisely expressed
By sabbath soldier
I bought this book based on a recommendation from Facebook, which I've never done before. But as an alum and the son of a long time instructor at the University and having been around the campus in one way or another for 35 years, I had a good feel for many of the issues expressed by Harold. The lack of a coherent campus identity is a long standing problem, along with a deep-seated complex about its pecking order in the ranks of the Bay Area's Universities. While only vaguely aware of some of the fact concerning the name change for the University, I do agree with Harold's thesis that the insistence of minimizing the role of SJSU (or CSU-SJ, if you prefer) in the state's educational history has been detrimental to students and grads for decades. One aspect of his critique I felt was underdeveloped was the impact this inferiority-complex has on fundraising and endowments. And, while I don't agree with all aspects of his solution, I would concur with the book that all avenues to raise the profile of the University are desperately needed. A worthy read for any grad of SJSU, even if you find some of the arguments to be non-persuasive.

SJSU, CSU or CSUSJ

Very interesting historical facts of my college Alma Mater and of San Jose. It's also an easy read with some good pictures.

A manifesto to all CSU students and alumni that want to see an improvement to the system’s identity.
By Mike D Hentrich
Finally someone takes a critical look at why the San Jose State University is what it is today; mired in mediocrity and would rather keep living in its “small time” fantasy instead of doing what is needed to be the undisputed flagship campus of the CSU system. Mr. Harold has basically set forth here a manifesto for the pro-CSU movement at the San Jose campus that can inspire all CSU students and alumni to step up to the powers that be and force them to improve the system’s identity. Eventually its CSU identity will be restored, either by legal means or by the administration’s use of common sense, logic and marketing principals. This is an important history many of you may not know about, but should.
