Whenever I'm meditating on Matthew 28 ("Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you"), my mind always goes to Deuteronomy 6:5-7,
"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise." Paul makes this connection clear when he provides instructions to Timothy for ordaining elders in the churches of Ephesus,
He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? (1 Timothy 3:4-5). Although this guideline is for elders specifically, we must not be so quick to turn these qualifications into a holy grail, an instruction only for the "super" spiritual. D. A. Carson notes how ordinary these qualifications are. They are "remarkable for being unremarkable." If we follow the storyline of the gospel, we see believing parents are always instructed to teach their kids how to love God (Deuteronomy 4:9, 6:1-7, Proverbs 13:24, 19:18, 22:15, 23:13, 29:17, Ephesians 6:1-4). In a fuller revelation, we now understand this command in light of the gospel--in light of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 4:6).

Not a How-to Book (which Is A Good Thing)

Too many books addressing issues related to the Christian family assume altogether too much. "Begin at the beginning, which is a very good place to start," we're told by Lewis Carroll in Alice in Wonderland.
Mr. Sims does the Church and the Family a service by assuming nothing, and beginning at the very beginning: explaining and defining "gospel" (which is another word for the good news of the Christian faith) and how it implicates moms and dads in the home.
The book takes the reader from a definition of the Gospel (chapter 1, "What is the Gospel?") to how the Gospel affects the reader (presumably a mom or a dad; chapter 2, "The Daily Gospel for You").
From here, the reader is shown how this personal belief and trust and faith in the Gospel Story ought to change the way we live together as families (chapter 3, "Gospel Liturgy in Our Homes"), not in a formulaic, or cookie-cutter way, but by showing how our faith should permeate every part of our home.
A good example of his approach: "Parents must tell the story of the gospel in all areas of life. We must speak about the story of the gospel until it becomes the very air our children breathe." (A Household Gospel, p. 49, print edition)
A comment about the title of chapter 3, and its use of the word "liturgy." I mentioned "cookie-cutter" in my comment above. If you're looking for a step-by-step guide on how to pray with your children, or how to teach them to have faith in Jesus, or to lead them in family worship, this isn't your book. That's *not* what he means by "liturgy."
The word "liturgy" is used in the broad sense; he says it is the creation of a "rhythm" of grace in the daily activities of the home (AHG, p. 52). Such "daily activities" include pursuing humility, honoring every member of the home as an image bearer of God, modeling repentance, expressing joy in God's blessing, and the importance of eating together.
Mr. Sims doesn't shy away from specific suggestions regarding the traditional topic of "family worship." He also gives helpful resources for the reader who wants to delve deeper into that topic. But the value of the book is that the suggestions he does give are embedded within the larger flow of the Gospel story.
His suggestions are not "rules" that a parent has to keep, but broad goals, and when he mentions specifics (like teaching your children Bible truths using a catechism), they are explained as a means to helping our kids discover the good news of how much God loves them.
The last two chapters of the book are warnings against unhealthy or inappropriate discipline (either too much, or too little), and unhealthy marriages, both of which can undermine the rhythm or liturgy of the gospel in a home.
--on discipline: "Whatever method of discipline you use, ensure that it is firm and that you follow through" making it "less about us and more about God." (AHG, p. 63)
--on marriage: "Some may disagree about (role distinctions), but it should at least be admitted that however much one disagrees with them, there is nothing intrinsically abusive about these roles when we tether them to Christ." (AHG, 68)
A couple of minor critiques of the book:
1. Several quotations of scripture and other texts/books are long, which may be a challenge for some readers.
2. No mention is made of the sacraments, and the role that they play in faithful parenting of our kids.
As I said in the beginning, this little book does parents a great service. Instead of assuming too much, Mr. Sims walks the reader, parents and would-be parents, step-by-step through the basics of what it means to be a Christian, and to believe the Christian story. But he does so in a way that many readers will find refreshingly simple.

The Whole Gospel for the Whole House

Matthew Sims is a Christian just like you and me. He needs the gospel and wants to understand its implications better in his life. This is the essence of his first book A Household Gospel. Sims is an honest writer who lays his life before us in order that we might benefit from how he has applied the gospel to his life.
Writing primarily to men, Sims offers a fresh look at gospel application on our homes. He begins with the gospel itself as viewed through the creation, fall, redemption and restoration paradigm. Moving from the gospel Sims begins the work of application on himself by showing us how to preach the gospel to our own lives first. Then it is onto our homes. Through the use of catechisms, family devotions, gospel preaching churches and gospel saturated homes, Sims challenges the reader see how the gospel is to saturate our lives.
A Household Gospel is a great primer on gospel application to our homes. The books is filled with Scripture and Sims shows himself to be well read as he allows himself to be taught by some of the best Christian writers God has given the church. Read this for yourself and encourage everyone you know to do the same.

This book tackles the often neglected and glorious life-changing impact the Gospel covers over the whole of Christian life:Namely, how does it exactly affect our families?
Matthew Sims does a superb job in "A Household Gospel" explaining chapter through chapter the depths and heights of the redemption story and love we have been shown in Christ, with outstanding implications the Spirit of God can guide us through. From liturgies in our homes to resources for family worship, this book covers the practical in great detail. Even as a single, I couldn't recommend this more and extol how it surely benefits many areas in my own life. Christian families:this one is a must!
