A Southern Historical with Style!

This is a first novel from a Georgia author, presenting a fascinating view of Southern history through the lives of one Georgia family. The patriarch is a fearsome gospel preacher who “came down from the mountains” following the Civil War. Through his descendants we experience the contrast between life on a rural farm and the enticements of big-city living—automobiles, moving pictures, store-bought clothes and more. This is a narrative account—very little dialog. Even so, the story is so well told that I was eager to know the fates of all of the characters. If there’s a soft spot in your heart for the South, you will truly enjoy this book!

Never Isn't Long Enough

This is a book reflecting Southern history from the 1800's forward & her characters who lived it.
F. Diane Pickett used her wit & creativity to weave a tale of dreams & dashed hopes. I loved how she incorporated the history of the time against the background of both her real & imagined characters. You feel these people's happiness & pain as if it's your own. This book is a page turner!!!!

A Little Something Southern for Everyone

After the Civil War, the rebuilding of the South was realized through industrialization, urbanization and technological advances in rural American farm communities. Drawing from over three hundred years of her own family's Southern heritage, F. Diane Pickett offers an informative and entertaining look at the post-Civil War era South and takes the reader through the years of both World Wars. Pickett gives her readers glimpses of everything from the introduction of the automobile, moonshiners, the Roaring Twenties, to the arrival of movie theaters. All of these events changed how communities and individuals experienced life during these changing times.
Pickett's characters are at once quirky, humorous, and very real. Pick is a mountain man who answered "the call" and Faye is a young farm woman who longed for "excitement." The story of Pick and Faye takes readers on a roller coaster ride and introduces them to a host of quirky characters.
While this story is a narrative that is short on dialogue, it is rich in Southern charm and imagery. Pickett writes in such a style that her reader is transported to a different place and time. That ability to lure readers into another world is a gift that this reader relishes. There was the occasional distraction of an anachronism that jolted me back to my present location but that is easily overlooked when the tale is so delightfully engrossing otherwise.
Never Isn't Long Enough is sure to delight readers of both sexes and many ages. It will appeal to those who appreciate historical fiction as well as those who just want a great escape from modern day drama.
