Edith knits a "fine, woolly muffler" for Little Bear in Dare Wright's 1966 A Gift from the Lonely Doll, another of the Lonely Doll titles being reissued. Wright's signature b&w photographs evoke a voyeuristic feel.

About the Author
Dare Wright (1914-2001) was a fashion model and photographer based in New York City. In 1957, she used her childhood doll Edith and two teddy bears as the subjects of her first book The Lonely Doll. The combination of mesmerizing black and white photographs and simple, eloquent text made the book an immediate success and earned it a place on The New York Times Best Seller list along with Dare Wright’s next Lonely Doll book, Holiday For Edith And The Bears. A Gift From The Lonely Doll is the sixth book in the series featuring Edith, Little Bear and Mr. Bear. Originally published in 1966, it was photographed both within the confines of the author’s small apartment in New York City, and in and around the home of a friend in upstate New York. All of the photographs in this book have been reproduced from Dare Wright’s original negatives that she developed in the tiny darkroom of her New York City apartment.

Best of the series?

Dare Wright, A Gift from the Lonely Doll (Houghton Mifflin, 1963)
Perhaps the best, and according to the jacket copy the best-loved, of the Lonely Doll books is A Gift from the Lonely Doll, originally published in 1963. In this episode, Edith (the titular character) decides to make a Christmas present for Mr. Bear-- a long knitted scarf. Little Bear, always the heckler, tells Edith constantly that the scarf is going to be entirely too long. He's right, but Edith solves the dilemma in a creative way.
This is the only installment of the series I've read where Edith and the bears actually seem to operate as a family unit, with no absentee parenting or weirdly erotic scenes of punishment. A good little book, one I'd actually consider giving to my kid. *** ½

a lovely Christmas gift, but...

Like all Lonely Doll books, this story is completely charming and a wonderful Christmas gift for a teddy-loving child. But be warned, the paperback copy I purchased was disappointing because all the photographs were really quite blurry. That is why my rating was only 3 stars though Edith and the bears personally deserve more!

Still Enchanting after all these years

I loved this book as a child, and was thrilled to see
it reissued. Little Bear is the perfectly annoying little
brother nagging Edith about the gift that Mr Bear loved
even before it was "fixed".
