Quirky and romantic, Stay Close, Little Ghost is an ecstatic debut novel flecked with fever dream fairy tales: a girl with no eyes scratching personal messages into the walls of the subway tunnel, a woman whose running mascara streaks over her body as she fades into a shadow on the wall, a missing child seen swimming across a lake bottom, a lost secret city where love is like tasting the real thing after tasting the fast food version for your entire life, a house whose painted landscape and sky walls erupt into a blizzard, magic glasses that translate languages and see inside people, a map of all the four-leaf clovers in the city, miraculous diamonds that hold the key to any question in the world, and a little wolf that lives inside the stomach of the narrator. Against this fantastic backdrop, a wonderfully flawed mathematician unravels as he collides with the most famous open problem in modern computer science. The result is a love story unlike anything else.

Review
I find myself thinking of passages from Catcher in the Rye... Serang swims to the depths of his darkness and just as his lungs are about to burst, he turns back to the light. He sees beyond the fleetingsparks that we think are the essence of our lives. In the last few breaths of his book, Serang's voice arrests me. Until now, I've been aware of his adeptness at playing with the artifice of fantasy and fairy tale. He employs the imagery that these storytelling forms invite him to use but it's when he allows this structure to fall away that his voice transforms into the voice inside my head. He speaks to me directly and for the time it takes to read those last pages, I forget that I am holding a book in my hands.-The Uncustomary Book Review
Stay Close, Little Ghost, is reminiscent of Murakami's finest moments. It is unflinchingly honest, magically immersive and so imbued with heartache that it's like revisiting your Top Five All-Time Worst Breakups à la High Fidelity. But at all once. And completely devoid of self-pity's trappings because it's too stuffed with raw emotion's introspection to fit much of anything else.
-The Next Best Book Blog
It slams the rigidly logical vehicle of mathematical distillation into the hallucinatory fog of magical realism... Maybe it's because I'm coated in a little residual magic from recently revisiting the similarly feverish, preternaturally dreamlike world of Haruki Murakami, or because I've been wallowing in a surfeit of 30s-onset introspection... but Stay Close, Little Ghost offered one of those fated chance encounters of crossing paths with a novel at the absolute perfect time...

About the Author
Oliver Serang was born in Philadelphia in 1984 and raised by very civilized wolves. He loves storms, swimming in deep water, and feeling the wind from the subway. Stay Close, Little Ghost is a woozy treatise on the nature of love and human imperfection that he wrote while finishing his Ph.D. in Genome Sciences at the University of Washington, working as a visiting scientist in Agronomy at the University of São Paulo, and starting his research fellowship in Neurobiology at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He currently lives in Germany.

The colour of love
By Keris Nine
The short review is that Stay Close, Little Ghost is a story about love, relationships and breakdowns. The narrator, Oliver, has just come out of one bad relationship when he meets the wild, beautiful and flirtatious Yuki, whose irrational behaviour pushes him to the brink of a complete breakdown. The longer version of a review of Stay Close, Little Ghost is... well... it's complicated.
Stay Close Little Ghost is a slim little novel, but it delves into its subject in startling detail and in a manner that keeps the reader alert for nuances and clues. Oliver Serang's narrator probes for meaning and understanding in the mystical forces between two people with a hypersensitivity to those complex undercurrents, never relying on conventional descriptions or common notation. He makes use of unusual devices - a little wolf in the belly, for example, that sniffs and howls at those signals that go unnoticed by most people - as well as strange symbolism, portentous dreams and signs.
At times, Oliver Serang's writing style reminded me of the Symbolist writers, of Maurice Maeterlinck or Fyodor Sologub, which is not a route commonly followed in modern literature. Serang however applies this style meaningfully, creatively and in an entirely modern context with the intention of delving more deeply to get past the convenient fallbacks that writers usually rely on when exploring this subject. It's not always easy to follow but it ensures that the book pulses with the vibrant imagination of this unique outlook without ever becoming precious or pretentious. It's like a literary form of synaesthesia, the author resorting to abstract visual references to describe the indescribable, mapping out relationships on a magic diamond, or finding a mathematical solution to the placement of four-leaved clovers in a city.
There's a clue to the romanticism that lies at the heart of the book in those two examples, as well as the narrator's attempt at understanding the workings of the world through Swan Lake and an analysis of the cry-baby heroes of fairytales. Nothing however is so easily pinned down and Oliver's experiences and some David Lynch-like blurring of the boundaries between nightmares and reality take him to much darker places. Stay Close, Little Ghost is all about trying to fit into a spiky world without becoming spiky yourself, finding the colour of your own love and doing whatever is necessary to stop your soul turning grey. As that description implies, the journey and any answer the reader might find is anything but conventional, but when you've been to some dark places, perhaps it's that kind of fresh outlook that is really needed.

A wonderful read for a rainy day
By Saurya Velagapudi
TL;DR: If you like words that make you feel, buy this book!
Imagine that Randall Munroe of XKCD fame was a contemporary of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and they decided on a joint venture: Catcher in the Rye 2, with a less whiny, more mature Holden Caulfield narrating his travails through personal and professional pain with wit and sincerity. You could continue imagining, or you could buy this book and see what that collaboration would have yielded - a fantastic (and occasionally phantasmal) journey into the modern condition: the anonymity of a city, the ubiquity of hedonistic pleasure and the exacerbation of a frayed social fabric due to our quickly changing times. The narrator himself is the exemplar of the new generation: he struggles with a modern research problem while trying to answer the age old questions of 'can we ever trust anyone?', 'can we ever know someone fully?', 'what is love?'. Serang seems to have taken Hemingway's barb against Faulkner "Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words?" to heart: this book is a quick read, but I wouldn't say a light one - it is filled with moments of heartbreak, anguish, confusion and unfiltered emotional sincerity. Through all the crises the narrator faces though there is a resilience that lives on, and like the sun breaking through the clouds after a storm, the book leaves behind in you a bit of the indomitable spirit and lust for life that the narrator embodies.

Awesome Trip
By Zoeytron
Whaaat? Ready for a fantastical trip reminiscent of dropping acid back in the day? Or a crazy dream that you desperately try to hang onto even as it drains from your mind when you awaken? You are in for a special treat with Oliver Surang's debut novel. The imagery is so vivid it almost made my eyes blur. See the recurring homeless man with the sticky brown smile, the little girl with no eyes who etches messages onto the walls of the subway tunnels.
The narrator is a mathematician by trade, he thinks of himself as a math farmer. He also has a small wolf living in the pit of his stomach and constantly strives not to become nocturnal. He has a gift for finding four-leaf clovers. Having a map of the location of thousands of them in his mind, he harvests as needed. He has a pair of X-ray glasses that allow him to see inside people, including souls that have gone gray.
The idea of a woman's house with painted landscape and sky walls so real that a blizzard boils up inside is crazy good. And what could be truer than the notion of this - 'If everyone wins, then the value of winning is nothing.'? We would do well to keep this in mind in today's world.
This is a love story unlike any I have read. We all want a love that is irreplaceable, but sometimes the burden of carrying such a weight is too much. Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of his book to read. It was an awesome trip. This novel may not be for everyone, but if you are ready to trip the light fantastic, settle in and enjoy.
