About the Author
Craig S. Whitmore is a former interpretive ranger with the National Park Service at Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial at Put-in-Bay, Ohio. His work with the National Parks has placed him at Hot Springs, Arkansas, National Park and at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in Ft. Olglethorpe, GA. He has been a teacher of creative writing, journalism, and electronic media, and is an accomplished public speaker. He has authored numerous newspaper articles on biking Ohio's Rails to Trails. He is a graduate of Ashland University and holds a masters degree in education. He currently lives in Ohio.

Authentic, Fascinating History

Craig Whitmore's freshman novel, "The Last Roar," is an excellent read and a fine contribution to the genre of historical fiction. The War of 1812 is often called the Second American Revolution or the Real American Revolution. Either way, its impact on American history was profound. Whitmore skillfully uses fictional characters, interspersed with real figures, to create an interesting book about the time period. His expertise as a park ranger shines through as he writes with knowledge about the weapons, ships and events of the period. His main character, George Armstrong, is a man who essentially wants to be left alone, but is inexorably drawn into the conflict that played out on the Great Lakes and what was then the American frontier. I highly recommend The Last Roar and look forward to more from this author in the future.

Interesting time period and area of the country in which not a lot of history is written.

Book had a lot of interesting details that I wasn't aware of in regards to the events leading up to the battle, the building of the ships, etc. For example they had to bring in carpenters all the way from Philadelphia in order to get the entire fleet built. There was a shortage of nails and a shortage of sailors; getting stuck on a sand bar right in front of the British fleet and the use of "Camels". I'm still interested in the fact that an order was issued to boil the water before drinking because they were getting "lake fever". This is well before the knowledge of germs etc. and you wonder how they knew this would make the water safer.
This book is an interesting look at some not very well know Ohio history and I enjoyed it very much.

What an incredible ending!

WOW!!! What an incredible ending, BRAVO! Craig Whitmore crafts an exciting story that follows the human drama of people caught up in the War of 1812 and the Battle of Lake Erie. The story, told from multiple perspectives, is faithful to the original history and small details that take the reader far beyond mere dates and places. Certainly, a very powerful ending that ties all the loose ends together and leaves the reader, along with the characters, coming to terms with the real costs of victory. Highly recommended.
