BOOK REVIEW

In his debut, MacDougall brings readers the wit, wisdom and secrets he's learned over the years as an alcoholic and a spiritual director at an addiction recovery center.  He writes with honesty and humor about his own struggles, as well as the  immense power of Alcoholics Anonymous.

A heartfelt, worthwhile read for anyone who is struggling with addiction.

THIS BOOK IS WRITTEN BY A BRILLIANT MIND WITH A GIFT FOR HUMOR, CLARITY, ORIGINALITY, AND MOST IMPORTANT -SIMPLICITY. IN MY OPINION, NO BETTER BOOK HAS BEEN WRITTEN ON RELAPSE PREVENTION AND THE 12 STEPS SINCE THE BIG BOOK. THE AUTHOR HAS SPENT 30 YEARS IN AL-ANON, NA AND AA AND KNOWS WHAT HELPS - AND WHAT DOESN'T - BACKWARDS AND FORWARDS. OF EQUAL IMPORTANCE, THIS IS A BOOK ABOUT POSITIVE TRANSFORMATION FOR US ALL, ESPECIALLY THOSE IN RECOVERY FROM ANY SORT OF SUFFERING. George E, Vaillant MD Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School Author of Spiritual Evolution

From the Back Cover
"As we realize we have a God, rather than we are gods, we get to stop trying to control life, and we get to simply live life instead. I've decided that my life is unmanageable only when I am trying to manage it. My life isn't meant to be managed, it is meant to be lived." This quote is one of the hundreds of pithy ideas from John MacDougall's new book, the book you are soon to be engrossed in. His insights, and they materialize with ease on every page, are amazing and I've loved hearing him share them in meetings and on the "circuit" for years. But having all that wisdom, told with humor at times, but with clarity always, in one place is what makes this book invaluable. John simply gets to the core of any issue with such ease, and he makes himself understood with little work on the reader's part. He writes, or speaks, and we listen and learn with our hearts and minds. John MacDougall has been instrumental in the lives of so many people, those in the fellowship and those who have simply been lucky enough to share a few moments of his time while passing through some stage of life. He doesn't reserve his gift of understanding how life works, life without alcohol or pills but always with a God of one's understanding, for any one group of people. John is simply "the whole package," wherever you meet him; on the pages of a book or in a meeting or an auditorium. You get him whole, unfiltered and erupting always with knowledge, wisdom, humor and a loving heart. Every time you are in his presence, you come away knowing more about the 12 Steps and how to live them, and with the backdrop of humor that helps to make the information even more significant. I love this book! Even after 37 years in Alcoholics Anonymous and a few more than that in Al-Anon, I found myself jotting down insights for my own edification, and to share with others. That's what spending any time with John is like. We are never too old to take on a new idea, one that not only benefits us but every single person who is crossing our path quite by divine appointment, today or any tomorrow. John has gotten better with age, with his commitment to the work of helping others, and his passion for passing on that which he has learned. Every one who chooses to gather even an inkling of the wisdom in these pages will bring benefit to the world we all share. Thank you, John. Thank you for helping every one of us make a difference in this life through the application of the principles you so completely embody. Karen Casey, Ph.D., author of Each Day A New Beginning.

There is a solution.
By Mark F. Marshall
Many who travel the path of recovery from addiction of whatever kind often find it cluttered with debris. Based on his personal experiences John MacDougall shows with grace, humor and compassion that the debris need not block the path but may in fact enrich the trip. John's words have been a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. You will not be alone if you let John go with you on your journey.

Top 10 books!!
By sherry hickman
If you are in a program of recovery--or even if you are not--you will love this book. It is insightful, intelligently written, full of personal experiences and GREAT advice. The author infuses humor into the most serious of subjects..and this strategy works to keep us connected to the material in a meaningful way.

The insight into what make for great interpersonal relationships is so valuable--I am having my two grown sons read the book for that reason alone.

Buy this book--for yourself and anybody you really care about--I did!!

Making Miracles Happen
By Mr. Mambo
I confess that I might be biased. I know John and his wife Priscilla. They go to our church, the Recovery Church, in St. Paul, MN. John's early years were harrowing, to say the least. But he survived, thank God. I say that because only God knows how many broken people have been helped by John. I have heard many of John's talks, and I have always found them to be at times enthralling, frightening, hilarious, and, ultimately, tremendously inspiring. This is the true, genuine, bona fide Voice of Experience.
My wife and I have been living among alcoholics and addicts for most of our lives, and we've had to learn the hard way, how to side step the assorted traps and snares that come with that whole scene. Basically, if you have an addict for a loved one, you must learn to detach, with love, to the point where you, a non-addict, can live happily and positively, by not being obsessed with your addict and with trying to control and change their behavior. One of the keys to this is to realize once and for all that the addict's brain and behaviors are governed chiefly by their drug, first and foremost. The drug and the addiction to it are all that matters. These poor folks are simply incapable of thinking in a rational and linear way. But we drive ourselves nuts by wondering why they do the nutty things they do.
I have many books on addiction and codependency, and most of them are very good, and helpful. But I have to say that this book is a cut above the rest. John is a simple, humble, honest man. He does not pull punches, and does not sugar coat his message. For example, one of the clichés in addiction and treatment circles, and a statement which always is made when someone falls off the wagon, to try to put a more positive spin on things, is: "well, relapse is a part of recovery." John vehemently disagrees with that statement. Relapse is NOT a part of recovery but part of the addiction.
My wife of 34 years (June 20, 1981) and I have signed up for a marriage seminar being put on by John and Priscilla at our church, the weekend of our anniversary. At a famous local addiction facility, this same seminar would cost well over $1000, but the MacDougalls are asking that each couple donate $100 to the church.....and if you can't afford that, donate what you can! You see, they aren't in it for the money, they are in it for the good, for the love, for the giving back, for the belief that they might be playing a small part in helping to turn around peoples' lives.
John would never admit it, but he is a giant in the field of recovery. You should read everything he has ever written on this subject.
