Review
A friend of mine once said, In college I studied Shakespeare, calculus, molecular biology. What I really wish I had learned was: How long do eggs keep in the refrigerator? How to be an Adult [set in italics] is packed with information required to make it in the real world where a person needs to rent an apartment, vote, set up a 401(K) and buy those eggs. If you know anyone who is graduating soon, buy them a copy of this book. It might be more useful than a car. --Gay Daly

Spend LESS time on the mundane stuff, using Nerissa s beautifully written how-to guide, while spending MORE time experiencing the FABULOUS world of all-the-way-grown-up life-- and make no mistake, being grown up IS a blast; Nerissa has some vital words to add there, too! ---- Dar Williams, singer-songwriter

This is a magical book-- I wish I d had it when I graduated from college! Nerissa Nields manages to combine the essence of Hints from Heloise with a spiritual wisdom reminiscent of Sharon Salzburg or Byron Katie, leavened with the humor of Anne Lamott. Even if you have no street smarts, and have spent the past ten years living under the North Pole, you will be ready for adult life with this engaging earth manual. Whether telling you how to pay taxes, change a flat tire, navigate a relationship with a house-mate, or stop beating yourself up with the club of perfectionism, Nields is amusing, smart, lively, and full of surprises. She is at her best when discussing psychological self-care, conscious living, self-acceptance, and the search for meaning. Every twenty-something (and many 40- or 50-year-olds, as well) should own and read How to Be an Adult. -- --Judith Hooper

A caring and approachable best friend in a book
By Sarah Lyman Kravits
In the information age, we think we can navigate most of life's twists and turns on our own with our electronic tools -- "Me and Google, we can figure out anything" -- but there's something missing. Guess what? We still need the human connection. We need a person to help us muddle through -- to be specific, someone we are willing to listen to (which eliminates many of the people in our lives whose advice comes across to us as condescending and prescriptive). We need -- well, we need Nerissa.

Get this book and you have a friend who is available to you at any time of the day or night, a friend who has just the right turn of phrase to help you a) understand yourself better, b) grok what kind of choices or changes would make a difference for you, and c) actually take action to get what you need. As useful for twenty-somethings as it is for forty-somethings who realize there are a few things that they still haven't quite figured out (shocking but entirely possible, as I can report from personal experience).

Wish I'd had this book 20 years ago!
By folkyCadence
I recently picked up "How to be an Adult" and I have to say I am totally engrossed. Even though this book would have been great when I was in my 20's, I am loving and appreciating all the practical advice mixed with real life anecdotes and stories. At 40, I still can't believe I have to make adult decisions. When did THAT happen?! Seeing as how I figure I could be 90 before I have life all figured out, I think I will keep this book as a reference for a very long time. So far I am about 2/3 of the way through (although I admit I have flipped ahead to the end where I found the family and relationships section) and am devouring the book. It doesn't read like a self-help book but more a series of interesting stories on how to navigate this crazy world. I'm loving it! Great gift for anyone starting out at any point in their lives.

Big-sister-in-a-book
By Tanya R. Royer
I'm in my 40's and have re-read this book multiple times to revisit the practical, friendly advice inside. I recommend this book to soon-to-graduate students at a local college where I sometimes speak as a subject matter expert guest. You can't go wrong with this big-sister-in-a-book guide and the updates for the digital version are timely and relevant.
