Entertaining Read That Teaches Some Valuable Lessons

Jonathan Hollerman does a great job of teaching basic survival skills while also telling a fascinating and fast paced story in this new book. Some readers who already know all this stuff may be annoyed by such things as Sean's seemingly long-winded survival monologue early on where he addresses his coworkers at Speednet, but I found myself wanting to take notes. This was a lecture that could have been labelled Survival 101. The author is very skilled at taking sometimes complex survival concepts and breaking them down into bite-sized nuggets. For example, I found the description of Sean and Maria's trek to the family farm to be portrayed very realistically, and I found myself with goosebumps thinking about making such a trip. The author explains why Sean does the things he does, and I defintely found myself learning from his writing. I will also admit I did find myself second guessing some of Sean's decisions, as we often do when reading a really good book, but the information imparted by the author remained fascinating and useful throughout the story.
One of the best points to this book is the unpredictable plot, where the author seemed to delight in placing the reader into positions where you want to say, "Okay, now what are we going to do?" As for the action fans, you get plenty here, but it is realistic and scary. Not every confrontation turns into a firefight, and not every firefight is preceeded by a confrontation. Here again we see the author being unpredictable, which is frightening when you think about how realistic he keeps the storyline. No, those aren't fantasy zombies trying to kill Sean and Maria, they are simply neighbors who are trying to feed their starving children.
Another point in the author's favor is he actually gives us an ending. Yes, the story is wide open for a sequel (hint, hint, Mr. Hollerman) but we are not left with a cliffhanger, damsel in distress stinger at the last minute.

What to do when the gadgets all die...

Jonathan Hollerman's Equipping Modern Patriots, describes how easily our country would be crippled by the use of an EMP attack. Unlike most of the shows I have seen, (Revolution, Walking Dead) that are based on some kind of post apocalyptic society, it paints what I believe is a much more realistic picture of how most people would react. The portrayal of the main character, Sean, does a great job navigating through the breakdown of our modern society.
There is a ton of great basic survival information in the first section that would be easy for anyone to act on immediately. Sean grabs all his coworkers and walks them through how to quickly gather resources and prepare for hard times ahead. Coaching them though focusing on their basic four immediate needs would certainly help people begin thinking about how to respond to this scenario.
During the story, Sean has to make many tough choices to try to bring about a new community that is self sufficient. He leads his group to walk a fine line that allows them to look after their own without taking advantage of the neighboring people. It would be far too easy with all the resources and firepower they have compiled to just take what they need to maintain their camp. Sean's values and faith show through in that his actions. You can tell how badly he feels when he is forced to protect what is theirs.
The suspense in how Sean handles the conflict with Mr. Andrews builds throughout the book and I enjoyed how it was resolved. Overall, I found the book very well done. It was realistic in my opinion and engaging enough that I read it in 2 days.

A must read, very informative!

This outstanding book induces one to ponder the “what if.” What would happen if an enemy detonated a nuclear device in the atmosphere above the United States? Jonathan Hollerman methodically addresses this question – and more. It becomes immediately apparent that this author possesses extensive military survivalist knowledge and has devoted years of research to applying this knowledge to dealing with the effects of an EMP attack. This book will provoke you to contemplate, analyze and prepare for such an attack. The threat is carefully studied, factoring in human desperation and the effects of mob behavior.
I found the subject matter captivating and didn’t want to put the book down. I went to bed with an uneasy feeling -- like watching a horror movie and having the uncontrollable urge to close the curtains, lock the doors and windows and grab a steak knife to place under the pillow – but wishing that it was a 44 magnum. The difference is that this uneasy feeling has stayed with me. I, for one, am making continual and incremental plans to ensure that I’m psychologically, emotionally, and financially prepared for any such disaster. I find my actions to be completely rational and no different than planning a home fire drill; and topics such as how do we leave, where should we go, and what to take, need to be addressed. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to be prepared for a potential EMP attack. After reading this book you will certainly be prepared to handle any natural or man-made disaster.
