The first of his family to go to college, he attended Notre Dame University on athletic scholarships. His athletic accomplishments during his high school years at La Crosse Aquinas and later at Notre Dame were record setting and remarkable. He is one of the few remaining members of the "Greatest Generation" who served in World War II. His marriage of more than 65 years is a true love story. And his entrepreneurial work as executive director of the Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association and his selfless leadership and dedicated community life are truly memorable. But A Beautiful Dream: The Steve Pavela Story is more than the sum of interesting experiences. About the Author
Gayda Hollnagel is a La Crosse native and a former La Crosse Tribune reporter and copy editor. During a nearly 30-year career at the Tribune, she covered everything from religion and criminal courts to education, families and local government. She is co-author with Susan T. Hessel of the 2007 La Crosse County Historical Society's A History of La Crosse, Wisconsin in the Twentieth Century: Reinventing La Crosse Again and Again. She and Hessel also co-authored Justice: Not Just Us: June Kjome: The Making of an Old Lady Activist, 2008; and, with Dora Russek, Every Day in My Mind I Have This: A Story of Survival, the Story of a Holocaust Survivor, 2010.

A Beautiful Dream

This was my husband's high school basketball coach. To this day they are in touch with each other by phone. My husband was elated and read over half of the book Christmas Day. I think it was his most favorite gift of the day. Thank you for your promptness in getting the book delivered.

A Wonderful Human Interest Story

It was an excellent human interest story about a very nice, gentle, kind man who was a great athlete. He changed peoples lives for the better. I had the pleasure of having Mr. Pavela as a teacher during my freshman and sophmore years at St. Mary HS in Michigan City, IN. The fact that I knew him made the book appealing to me.
