Night Chill is now a 2014 Foreword Reviews Book of the Year Finalist."Readers looking for a good scare will delight in this novel, even if they suddenly feel compelled to sleep with the lights on." - Publishers Weekly."Gunhus delivers a taut supernatural thriller...All the chops of an action-packed horror tale." - Kirkus Reviews."I see a lot of book synopses that claim works by lesser known authors are King-like or that their writing style is similar to Koontz. I always take these with a grain of salt. But in this case, it's very true." - A Goddess Of Literature

"...unforgettable, exceptional debut. A primitive ritual and an ancient secret threaten a family's safety in this heart-pounding tale of horrific madness, Guaranteed to trigger night sweats along with a childlike, irrational fear of the creaky attic, Jeff Gunhus's Night Chill will not disappoint horror fans." - Foreword Clarion Reviews - 5 STARS

"A long time reader of Dean Koontz, I would dare say Night Chill was up there with some of the best from Mr. Koontz. Plenty of twists and turns that kept me just wanting to keep reading." - Aussie Kindle Fanatic

From the Author
2nd Edition - Newly edited and revised. If you downloaded an early copy, please update your version today. Night Chill is a supernatural thriller in the tradition of Stephen King and Dean Koontz and is intended for mature audiences. For fans of my novel Jack Templar Monster Hunter and the books of The Templar Chronicle MG/YA series, this is a complete departure from that world. First, this novel is written for adults and contains all the language adults tend to use. Second, there are strong horror elements. That doesn't mean it's overly gory or disgusting (not my kind of book), but I've had emails from readers that there are scenes that kept them up at night. Which leads me to...#3 Night Chill is scary. Not in the way a creature feature or a slasher movie is scary though.  Think instead of being home alone, the doors locked for the night, the kids asleep and, just as you close your eyes, you hear the creak of a floorboard downstairs. Followed by another. And another. Too regular and heavy for it to be anything other than someone or something that shouldn't be there. If you can imagine that feeling of adrenaline-soaked fear and dread, then you will know what you can expect from Night Chill. If you are a young fan of the Jack Templar books, this novel is not for you. If you are that young fan's parent, come try out a few chapters and see if you can handle it. Let me know what you think in the reviews here and at JeffGunhus.com. Thank you.

From the Back Cover
Dear Reader,

Thank you three times.

First, thank you for supporting a fellow human being's passion. I think it makes you a good person and makes up for that one thing you did in high school (you know what I'm talking about.)

Second, thank you for being part of the community of readers. Each time you write a review, recommend a book to friend or share a new novel through social media, you help keep the fire for books alive. Those of us who scribble stories late into the night are completely in your debt.

Lastly, thank you for your time. As a father of five and an avid reader (labels that can seem mutually exclusive at times), I recognize every book you open represents a hard choice among thousands of options. I'm awed and humbled that you chose to spend your valuable time within these pages. I hope that I proved to be worthy of your trust.

With appreciation,

Jeff Gunhus

Wonderful Book
By A Goddess of Literature
I see a lot of book synopses that claim works by lesser known authors are King-like or that their writing style is similar to Koontz. I always take these with a grain of salt. But in this case, it is very true. The plot was so deeply layered and well thought out I was half expecting a scene where someone spots Pennywise while driving through Derry, or of someone eating a bologna and Bermuda onion sandwich (has anyone else noticed King's character's obsession with this sandwich?), or that Jack was committed to Juniper Hill Asylum because this book does have that amazing degree of creepiness that Stephen King has perfected. Then again, there IS a yellow lab, a dog species which Koontz often has traipsing through his plots.

This is a dangerous book of "one more". One more chapter and I'll do the laundry. One more chapter before I start dinner. One more chapter and I'll call and order a pizza deliver. One more chapter ... eh, the kids are old enough to make themselves a sandwich when they get hungry. Be prepared to have a very unproductive day because this book is incredibly fast paced and there is no good place to set it down and walk away. I was constantly wanting to find out what would happen next and was not disappointed. There were quite a few editing errors but the storyline more than made up for the annoyance.

A tense mystery
By From the Mind of Tatlock
Review originally posted on my website, From the Mind of Tatlock

It's been awhile since I've read a book that kept me this intrigued in the mystery it was laying out. Night Chill starts off fast and doesn't let up. It will leave you guessing what's going to happen next and after the last page turns, you'll be begging for more. I don't normally praise a book this much (unless it's Bond, James Bond, or a movie novelization... okay maybe I do, so sue me!), but author Jeff Gunhus has a winner on his hands here. Read on to find out why this book will give you the chills...

Slightly longer nitty-gritty plot description from the back cover is as follows: Jack Tremont moves his family to the quiet mountains of Western Maryland hoping to leave behind a troubled past and restart his life. Instead, he finds himself caught up in a nightmare when his daughter Sarah is targeted by Nate Huckley, a mysterious and horrifying stranger driven by a dark power that will stop at nothing to possess Sarah. When Sarah goes missing, suspicion falls on Jack and he must uncover the secrets of the small mountain town of Prescott City and face the evil secret hidden there. As he digs further, he learns the conspiracy reaches more deeply than he could have imagined. Finally, he will have to face the question, What is a father willing to do to save his child? The answer? Anything. Anything at all.

I went into Night Chill blind. I didn't read the synopsis or anything. I was just told to check it out and that I did. So, when I first started reading the book, my interest was piqued. The book starts off fairly quick and doesn't pussy foot around, or delay slapping the supernatural in your face. We have mind readers, mysterious diseases, child abduction, gruesome deaths and crazy, insane, unexplained events. The beginning is certainly jammed pack with the interesting delights. As you keep reading, the book will slowly dish out the little tidbits you need, but doesn't go over board in the exposition, leaving you always guessing with each chapter end.

It also helps that the characters of Night Chill are beautifully layered and well developed. Jack Tremont, the troubled author who is trying to move on with his life, after a tragic event in his past, is a loveable father and husband. He will do anything for his kids and that is shown later on, when he is put through the ringer, having even the woman he trust most, his wife, think him a liar and possibly a lunatic. You're with Jack most of the book, so you feel for him and you wish him the best, but it's not just Jack you get to know. Jack's wife, Lauren gets her own spotlight and the book spends some quality time with her. Finally, the other character in the book that I absolutely loved, was Joseph Lonetree, a man who knows exactly what is going on and looks to stop it at any cost, even if some innocent people die in the process. Lonetree was satisfyingly off putting at first, but after Jack spends a good amount of time with him, the two become an unlikely pair, a force to be reckoned with.

Night Chill seems to have it all for the horror fan/supernatural lover. It's got a beautifully laid out mystery, that spans centuries and involves something terrifying for any parent out there. The abduction of children is a touchy subject and the book goes for the throat with it and doesn't let go. Parents are going to be sweating bullets with this one. As for me, I'm not a parent, but I do love a great mystery and Night Chill is exactly that. There is imagery here that will stick with me for awhile, a universe that I don't want to let go of and I hope Jeff Gunhus continues with this idea. The ending does leave it open for more and raises a question, that I would love to get answered.

I highly recommend Night Chill and I think it's one book that shouldn't be passed up. It's a tense mystery, that will envelope you from page 1 and stay with you long after the last page is turned.

Night Chill is a fantastic Paranormal Horror/Suspense story
By Drue Hoffman
Set in Maryland, Jack Tremont and his family moved away from the hustle and bustle of California for what they feel is a better quality of family life. That is until weird things start happening.

Jack gets a warning from the well-known town vagrant and then the vagrant is struck by lightning and issues Jack another warning, someone is after his daughter. But who or what is the question.

Jack soon finds himself in the middle of something he can hardly get his mind around but regardless the only thing to do is save Sarah from the evil that has found the Tremont family. With some unlikely help, Jack is thrust into a world he's only seen on Television and in the Movies. But will he be able to save Sarah in time?

Night Chill is a fantastic Paranormal Horror/Suspense story. By the time I got to the chapter that FINALLY told what exactly was going on I was too wrapped up to put the book down and just had to keep going. Oh and the whole rest stop thunderstorm scene scared the bejesus out of me, I'm from Ohio, Maryland isn't that far and I've been there, I was able to totally picture the eerie scene and with the exception of a few things I could totally imagine this whole scene actually happening and seeing it on the evening news. That's what I think I liked most about this book, even though it's a paranormal story it's not written to be totally unbelievable, much of the story probably has actually happened at some point in time.

I do hope there is more to come from Mr. Gunhus and the Night Chill tale. The way the book ended I can see it going either way, ending with Night Chill or going on to become a series. (by now everyone should know my vote, based on how many series I read ) :-)
