A SAD HEARTFELT STORY OF SURVIVAL AND A NEW FOUND LIFE
By MERLE JACOBSON
A PERSONAL ACCOUNT, BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN ABOUT DETERMINATION AND SURVIVAL. WE KNOW AND HAVE READ ABOUT THE CONCENTRATION CAMPS AND THE DAY BY DAY HORRORS OF SURVIVAL BUT THIS IS A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE STARTING WITH THE FREEDOM OF A NOW 15 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO HAS BEEN INCARCERATED FOR THREE YEARS AND IS TOTALLY ALONE.. HER DETERMINATION TO FIND A WAY HOME STARTING WITH HER WALK FROM GERMANY, TRYING DESPERATELY TO GET BACK TO HER HOME IN POLAND. HOPING TO FIND FAMILY AND HER HOME IN TACT SHE STRUGGLES TO GET TO CRAKOW ONLY TO FIND NOT ONE LIVING PERSON FROM HER FAMILY IS LEFT.
HER STORY IS ONE OF DECIDING FOR HERSELF WHAT SHE MUST DO AND HOW SHE MUST ACT TO STRUGGLE TO ATTAIN A NEW LIFE SOMEWHERE... FROM THE POINT OF WHEN HER LIFE AS SHE KNEW IT WAS ABRUPTLY TAKEN AWAY FROM HER.
FOR ALL OF US WHO WERE LUCKY ENOUGH NOT TO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE HORRORS OF WAR AND LOSING LOVED ONES, THIS BOOK IS A PAGE TURNER... ONLY TO WONDER HOW EACH ONE OF US WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MAKE THOSE DECISIONS TO KNOCK ON A STRANGE DOOR....TO WAIT FOR A TRAIN.....TO GO TO ISRAEL OR TRY TO GO TO AMERICA.....TO CHOOSE A CITY .....TO FIND PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE AGAIN WHO YOU CAN TRUST...WHO YOU CAN LOVE AND WHO LOVE YOU BACK.
THIS IS A MOVING AND TRAGIC STORY OF TREMENDOUS LOSS AND OF GUILT, BUT CARRYING ON, MOVING FORWARD, TO FALL IN LOVE, TO HAVE A FAMILY AND TO WRITE A STORY FOR US AND FOR HER CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN AS A LEGACY .......

Childhood Memories LInger Forever
By Elaine M. Silverstrim
Although this is a novel, it is clearly very autobiographical. The author, like the main character, was nine years old when WWII changed her life forever. In the course of the war, her father, than her mother were arrested and disappeared forever. She and her sister had been placed in a convent boarding school run by Ursaline sisters. Eventually the two sisters are betrayed and Rutka never sees her younger sister again. We've long been told that children subjected to extreme trauma are more resilient than adults; better able to adapt and adjust. This is yet another work that makes these assumptions patently false.

A story of survival
By salburkles
This story of survival is told with optimism in spite of the heart-wrenching facts. The personal loss & the cost of being the sole survivor is told without bitterness or self-pity.
