Heart and Home, by Jennifer Melzer

When reporter Janice McCarty left the small town of Sonesville after graduating high school, she vowed never to return. A late-night phone call eight years later and she has no choice but to go back to lay her mother to rest. Feeling out of place in the town she once called home, and adamant about returning to the big city as soon as possible, Janice's life is further complicated by former football star, Troy Kepner, who seems to show up every time she needs a knight in shining armor. Like her, Troy knows what it's like to have big dreams. He sacrificed everything to run the family farm after his dad died. Now he's got his sights set on the girl who got away. And just when she thought it couldn't get any more complicated, her mother's restless spirit leads Janice down a path she swore she'd never take, and Chandra McCarty's ghost has no intention of letting go until her daughter finally sees she's more than just a byline, and home is where the heart is.

About the Author
Jennifer Melzer spent the majority of her life as a writer denying she actually liked to write romance, only to wake up one morning and discover that every single tale she'd ever written had somehow revolved around the heart. She has since given into the whim, spinning yarns of love and firmly believing that everyone deserves a happy ending. She lives in Northeast Pennsylvania with her husband and daughter, but dreams nightly she is laying on the beach watching the stars fall over the Atlantic Ocean.

Couldn't put it down
By Sue B.
I forgot how much I love a really good romance novel. Most of what I read now is a mixture of fantasy, horror, and science fiction with the occasional satire or bizarro thrown in for good measure. There was a time when I read a lot of romance novels...

The main character returns to her small town roots when her mom dies suddenly. Thankfully, I don't know what it's like to lose a parent. So, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to relate to the main character. Then I read an essay on how the author dealt with the loss of her own mother while completing this book and I knew from that essay that the book would be written in a way that would make my worry a silly thing.

So I picked it up...and never put it down. Well, unless you count falling asleep while reading and having to dig my phone out of the sheets.

I thought it was a little cliche; but it's a romance novel...isn't it impossible for a story in that genre to not feel a little cliche? That's not an insult to this story in any sense. I think that feeling of familiarity is part of what made this so good for me.

The characters are well drawn and believable. So believable that I laughed out loud a couple times because I've known people exactly like some of them. I love that the characters have grown and changed from who they were in high school (well, most of them anyway).

There is a touch of the paranormal mixed in here that was the perfect undercurrent to the main storyline. I loved how it kept the heroine off balance.

This is a quick read with a very satisfying ending that left me feeling glad I read this book and thinking maybe I should pick up a romance novel more often. Or something else written by Jennifer Melzer...

just ok
By C Cobb
Interesting book for the most part, but some places just didn't quite ring true or get completely developed. Wasn't real happy with the ending. Not a cliffhanger, but still felt a little unfinished. A few minor editing errors. The paranormal stuff was not to my taste. Wouldn't read it again, but neither was it a complete waste of time.

SO MUCH POTENTIAL, SO MUCH DISAPPOINTMENT
By ADDICTED TO BOOKS
This book started out with so much potential. The first half was so good I couldn't put it down. Too bad that stopped about 60% through in the book. Janice is a very interesting, well developed character. Coming to grips with being an outsider coming home to where she never fit in, coming to grips with her mother's death is very well written. Having a parent die tragically, I related so much to how well that was written. Troy is an extremely likable, complex character. As the book goes on, more of his background & vulnerability comes out, & I very much wanted him to have a happy ending. Then the book starts to fall apart. The father is poorly written & barely integrated into the story. Janice stays home to be with him after the funeral, causing her major problems with her job, then eventually moves home to be with him. Yet she spends very little time with him, he's rarely written about, their relationship is not delved into, nor is his grief ever addressed. It makes the book unbelievable. The rest of the book feels like it's rushed through to be completed. I disliked the way their romance was completed & I felt very unsatisfied. That TOTALLY outweighed the beginning of the book. It's one of those book that starts good, but doesn't hold together by the mid-to-end of book.
