From the Author
It took me two years of writing every single day to complete this series. To some it may seem as if I wrote it quickly since this is over 2800 pages long, but it was not a fast process for me. This series is really about my life. It may be filled with vampires, demons, angels and all other kinds of paranormal stuff, but at the heart of it, it is about me. You see when I started to write this series my Dad had just passed away. To deal with this loss I wrote him into the story, to continue his life and to keep a small part of him alive for myself. Then my Mother was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and she passed away shortly after I completed this series. My reasons for writing this are simple and clear. I needed hope when hope seemed impossible. I wanted to hang on to people who meant the world to me and so in order to do that I made them immortal and bound them to these books. Now, this series is NOT filled with heartache, although you will encounter some, as life always seems to make us endure it. Instead, this series is a culmination of my life and my legacy as a writer. It is the longest and most personal journey I could share with the world. I also wrote it as a conceptual series by nature. Each book is actually written by Rue. She is the author, in saying that I mean this. Book one was written more simply than book two and so on. You experience her growth as a writer as you read each book, each chapter and each crazy situation she finds herself in. I did this on purpose, to hopefully show you growth within the storyline itself and the character as she grew up in front of your eyes. To me it was a vital part of making it appear to be more real to you. In the end I would hope that you can take away from it what I was able to take myself, a better understanding of the journey in life. The appreciation for those you love and how precious the gift of life really is. Because this is, by far, the most epic journey I could ever take you on. Thank you again for supporting me and enjoying my work. xoxo ~rue

Not a fan of Vampire stories, but....
By Rex
OK, a couple disclosures first:
A: I know the Author, she's a friend on FaceBook. And I don't friend people that I wouldn't actually want to hang out with, so my opinion might be biased.
B: This is offset by the fact that I'm not, in general, a huge fan of the Vampire genre. My idea of the basic vampire story: Boy meets girl, boy bites girl, boy and girl have stakes driven through their hearts. The end! That said...
I picked up the first installment of the Blood and Light series, entitled "Blood and Light". I was enthralled. The main character, Rue Volley (yes, named and patterned after the author). A 17 year old girl going through the normal issues of raging hormones, boys, school, & etc. Unfortunately, on top of that she's going through the changes that a Vampire goes through, which happen at a certain time of life, and has a whole other set if issues that go with it. She has on human and several new Vampire friends helping her through this. And the characters are all well written, and multi-dimensional, like real people are.
I mentioned my thoughts on the basic Vampire story plot above. Not so with Rue's books! There is actually a whole civilization of Vampires, with their own city and the whole nine yards. They also have, in addition to the usual extraordinary strength, many other perceptions as well. All that said, humans for once (and in a nod to reality) don't stand a chance against these guys. A lot of these books have to do with a civil war in their society and Rue's place in it.
If you're expecting nice, smooth read with predictable outcomes and an nicely wrapped up ending, forget about it. This is more like a literary roller-coaster ride. And the end of the first book (in fact, all three) is a cliffhanger of epic proportions. In fact, if you like "Blood and Light", then I would suggest ordering "Smoke and Mirrors", the second book, immediately so you're not tortured while waiting for it to arrive.
All in all, I LOVE these books. I've been reading them every chance I have. The third book ends in a cliffhanger that is even more epic than the one in the first book! There are 6 books I all, all fully written, but only 3 have been published. I highly recommend this series. It's part vampire story, love story (but NOT sappy), action & even SciFi all rolled into one.
Thanks for taking the time or read this, and I hope you enjoy these books as much as I have!

Minor Glitches But A Good Book Overall
By JBronder Book Reviews
This is the story of Rue and Kai. They are vampires, but don't think they live in coffins or sparkle in the sunlight. They are from an old race that protects the world, protectors. They need energy to survive so they can brush up against people or drink their blood. They also can manipulate energy, which is a lot like magic, and can move super fast.

Because of the civil was between the protectors, the radical group that believes that humans are nothing more then cattle has been in power. Rue's parents were part of the other side that felt humans need to be protected, like everything else in nature. The radicals have learned that Rue and Kai are the first born since the civil war and that Rue is even more special. They are trying to hunt her down to keep her locked in their private city.

Friends of Rue's parents, Sam, Joshua, and Theodore, are trying to keep Rue and Kai safe. But Rue is also attracted to Jonathan, the grandson of Caine, the main bad guy that is intent on trying to find a way to have children. Rue is torn between Joshua, who irritates the heck out of her, and Jonathan, whom she will do anything for.

This story has great potential; I'm excited to start reading Smoke and Mirrors. I also admit that I hate giving this a three star rating, but I have to. The writing is a bit jumpy. I had a reread several pages to figure out what was going on. I also didn't like that several characters had very similar names. When Rue kissed Joshua it took me a while to figure out that it was not Jonathan. Also, who was Sophia. One minute I see that name as Jonathan's sister then I see it as the mother of Caine. I also couldn't figure out the whole brushing up on people to feed when every where else they had to have blood to feed.

Beyond those minor annoyances, I would have given it a 4 star rating. It has a great new perspective on vampires. It is a good young adult story.

Four and a half stars!
By SinMacD
First I have to say, I am an author as well, and I already adore Rue Volley as a person, but I'm here to give a fair and honest review.

I started reading this book after a long spell of editing my own work and beta reading for others. At the start, I had difficulty just reading because my inner-editor wouldn't shut up! Halfway through the first chapter, something wonderful happened. Rue's concept, characters and artful storytelling took over, and I couldn't put the book down. I was SUPPOSED to build a website for an author friend. I was SUPPOSED to write a post for my blog. I was SUPPOSED to clean my house up and go to bed. Instead, I sat up all night and read. I HAD to know what happened next!

My inner editor isn't easily overcome. I have what I like to refer to as WCD, (writer's compulsive directive), and typos or misspellings generally hurl me out of a book faster than poor storytelling. Blood and Light was simply too compelling to allow that to happen. The characters are realistic and multi-faceted. The vampires were a refreshing break from the typical bloodsuckers, and a far cry from sparkling or simpering. The world Rue has created is intriguing, and the plot moves forward at all times. If you haven't read it yet, you're missing something special. This is a book I'll keep for my children to read in their teens.

Oh, and Rue, thanks for stifling my inner editor and allowing me to read purely for pleasure again.
