Four Million Steps is a book for readers and non readers of all ages. Great book to give as a gift. You can't put it down.

Neeson must be crazy, but in a way you wish you were or want your kids to be. His journey of determination motivates you to want to make a difference and get off your butt, but only by setting an example. His antics keep you entertained, I must have laughed out loud a dozen times. But while reading Four Million Steps, one minute you laugh and a page later tears roll down your face.
Take a day off work and read it in the waiting room of a shrinks office and you'll fit right in. I did. It really made people waiting want to read my book. They kept asking if they could have it and I would say yes when it's time for my appointment. Of course I didn't have an appointment, I just like the atmosphere. (and the sofas) ...But I may read it again in the airport lounge.
This man's journey shows humility in a way you would not expect from someone of Neeson's capabilities. Who runs thirty plus miles a day and talks about how everyone else he knows is a better runner? If it weren't for the reason behind his journey and the cause it represented, you would think he just lost his mind. But he pulls it off with such humor and feeling. He really shows you what the human body can endure when motivated. It's like a therapeutic journey and you are Tommy. You are running and you don't want to stop. You're running a marathon every day but it's easy for you. You don't want to stop, except to pet the llamas, but your body feels the pain. And all you hear is circus music, and it's played by Ozzy and Randy Rhodes.
Four Million Steps is off the rails. Read it and you'll not only understand, but you'll want to leave copies in unsuspecting public places. If you happen to see a copy in an airport, doctor's office, or such...you'll know I've been there. Once you read it, you'll want to leave copies in random places too.
One man's journey to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House may change the way you see the world, but it will definitely change the way you look at yourself.

A journey of inspiration and heartbreak

I fell in love with the storytelling in this book almost immediately. I really only know "of" Tommy in real-life and have only met him in person a small handful of times at local running events, etc. He probably couldn't even place my name to my face if he was to see me, because mostly those encounters have been fleeting moments at a race, or some such running event. I had no idea what this book was about when I purchased it, nor the journey that would unfold while reading the book. I only knew that it chronicled his journey from Maine to Florida. I didn't know the story of heartbreak of finding out his daughter had a terminal illness that would take her life at such an achingly young age. Learning about Tommy as a person was an eye-opening experience and kind of caused me to stop and think "what would *I* do had I been in his shoes?"
This book causes you to take a journey yourself. It causes you to look at your life in a way you may not have expected to. Sometimes, those very small moments of time that you think may not make a big impact on your life, can be the moments that have the greatest effect. Stop and enjoy those small moments with those you know and love, for you truly don't know when your time on this Earth may end.
Above all else, I really truly enjoyed this book. It was a quick read, but a powerful one that left me with a better understanding of WHO this "Tommy" guy really is. The way he tells his story is almost magical and you hang on every last word as you read it. From the encounters with those he least expected to the collecting of license plates (what did you do with them since your journey by the way?) and to raising money for an amazing and admirable charity such as the Ronald McDonald House, Tommy is truly a class act and amazing guy.

That is what it's like to read this story. This easy to read tale takes you on an incredible adventure. Not only over the roads from Maine to Florida, but through the thoughts, feelings, triumphs and tragedies of a regular guy who likes to run. It starts off as a tribute to his young daughter Randi, and to raise funds and awareness for the Ronald McDonald House Charities. But like every adventure in life, it becomes more than imagined. While the charity he runs for helps keep families together during difficult times, his beautiful family is shattered by difficult times. The Ronald McDonald Houses give families a place to rest and refresh, while he becomes a meandering athlete in unfamiliar places with no comfort or tranquility. The Ronald McDonald Houses provide a home away from home, but Tommy’s adventure leaves him homeless, in more ways than one.
There are many books to keep runners motivated, but most are about people or events that are beyond what the average runner could ever experience. Four Million Steps is a story about the guy next door. And it makes you realize all you have to do in life (or while running) is just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Tommy shows us how it's done.
