About the Author
Retired keyboardist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Jennings’ writing career began with a four-part series for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, ”Symphony Diary,” while on tour with the orchestra in Europe in 1994. That experience has evolved into nearly two decades of essays in which she shares her observations on everything from fashion to how the Internet impacts the American family. Her essays have appeared in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Symphony magazine, and various Western Pennsylvania-based publications. From 1988 to 1994 she was the publisher/editor of Symphonium, a newsletter for and about the professional African-American symphony musician.

Slices of American Life Written By Pittsburgh Native

Patricia Prattis Jennings has much to say about daily American Life – as she’s lived it in Pittsburgh and throughout her many travels and dual career, and as I’ve lived it as a Pittsburgh native transplanted to Ohio. Her topics vary widely, but no matter which essay you’re reading that feeling descends, “oh yes, I know just what she means” or “let me tell what I did when that happened to me!” She has a folksy, friendly way of writing, as if you are sitting in the room chatting with her. As her title implies, times have changed, and her many essays address a wide variety of topics. While I qualify for AARP membership and come from one era, I have a 20-year-old college-student daughter clearly of this new era who spirited the book away to her room and didn’t return it to me until she had finished it—and she has never lived in Pittsburgh but loved the book nevertheless! We all go through these daily issues no matter where we live; however, I have bought some extra copies of this book to send to my relatives who once lived in Pittsburgh. They will have a fond taste of a dear old city and they will also laugh and frown in almost equal doses over the subjects discussed. My only complaint is that I wish some of the essays were lengthier.

A Rare Ability

My experience, with most of the books I read, is that the authors are usually writing about some topic of special interest to them. But as a long time fan of Patricia Prattis Jennings, I have felt that she has a very rare talent of sensing what the interests are of her readers. Those little, but important topics of every day life, and expressed in language that harkens back to the old fashioned over-the-fence talk. Without hesitation, I give five stars to "In One Era And Out The Other"!

A wonderful collection

I've just ordered my 6th copy; have given them as gifts and people come back to tell me how much they enjoyed the book. Some laugh-outloud essays, some reflective and serious. All beautifully written. A talented woman.
