A Small Book About Big Ideas

Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi, known as Reb Zalman, is the founder of the Jewish Renewal movement and a kabbalist. This short book, God Hidden, Whereabouts Unknown: An Essay on the 'Contraction' of God in Different Jewish Paradigms, is only 56 pages long but has big ideas about "tzimtzum," the kabbalistic idea that God had to contract in order to have space to create the universe we live in.
The first part of the book contains a rather abstract, scholarly, essay about this concept as developed by co-author Netanel Miles-Yepez. It has an interesting analysis of human religious history in four ages - polytheism, deism, theism, and pantheism (our new era). Unfortunately these ideas are not as developed as one would like.
The second part of the book really comes alive. It is clearly in Reb Zalman's voice; this section is, I suspect, an edited transcript of Reb Zalman's 1985 lecture on this topic. He discusses the problem of evil and other Kabbalistic ideas such as the divine light trapped in this material world ("kleppot"). He concludes with an interesting analysis of what tzimtzum means for Jewish Renewal and the way that we choose to live as Jews in this modern world.

Excellent book!!!!!!

As a Kabbalist, I find this work to be not only intellectually stirring, but has answered many questions that I always thought about and now they have been answered. Each desire we have can only be filled by a satisfied dimension we get from something. Some are filled with food, drink, a good book, love making, eating. You got my point. My desire to understand has been fulfilled by much of what has been written in this small precious book.
I have been studying for years and I learned that you have to keep learning even if things are not understandable yet. This beautiful book thought me so much. I hope you all enjoy it's read.
