And a Bloody Good Time Was Had By All

This book proves to be an entertaining and insightful companion for the television series. As like the title indicates this work focuses on the television series rather than the series of books … as fans may know the happenings of the two worlds of Bon Temps are quite different. Though it would probably be better enjoyed by a reader that is already a fan or at least familiar with the show, than to be used as introduction into the TV world.
I enjoyed that there was quotes and insights from the actors who played the roles tucked throughout the character discussions, giving their unique perspectives on the world in which their character inhabits. Equally appreciated was that the author didn’t just focus solely on the journeys of Bill, Eric, and Sookie … that the secondary characters, that help bring the show a lot of its emotional appeal were explored as well.
On a personal side note: It did my little vampire geek heart wonders to come across all of the Anne Rice, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the few Vampire Diaries references throughout the book. And I am looking forward to reading some of this author’s other titles in the future.
Without hesitation, I would recommend this book to all the HBO series fans out there.

A very good book for a True Blood lover!

If you are a True Blood fan you definitely have to check out this book!
To me it was a lot like reading school material, only on a subject I am truly passionate about.
The author dives into three main themes: The Heroine's Journey, Other Character's Classic Journeys and Mythology. They all show very different aspects of the series, switching from HBO's TV show perspective to Charlaine Harris' book series perspective, referring also to the famous Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, The Vampire Diaries, Katniss from The Hunger Games and yes, you will find Harry Potter as well.
All the topics addressed are clear, concise but still so full of details that I enjoyed going through this insight on the series page after page. It really adds something more to the ordinary experience of simply watching a TV show.
The many quotes and interview bits were also appreciated; they made the narration much more dynamic and complete.
Personally what drew my attention the most was the Mythology chapter and the strong connection between some of the characters and all the figures belonging to a different time and culture. It was such a fascinating read!
I can honestly say I am really looking forward to reading more books from Valerie's publications!

Bloodsuckers on the Bayou is a strong work of scholarship that analyzes both True Blood the series and also the Charlaine Harris novels about Sookie Stackhouse from a powerful mixture of mythological and feminist criticism. I found all the analysis cogent, sensible, and interesting. The style is clean and consistent and readily readable. The book is very well-sourced and provides a deeply penetrating view of the symbolic roles of the characters in reference to their gender and their place in the traditional European fairy tale. Knowing only the show and now the novels, I was intrigued to learn more about the differences and to get a picture of Harris' approach through Frankel's words.
This is a scholarly book and is best suited for those who like a deep and complex analysis of popular culture. If you think spending many pages talking about supporting characters in relation to Sookie on a heavily symbolic level, talking about light and dark opposites, completion of heroic journeys to self-realization, and other such concepts is fascinating, this is the book you want. I can't imagine anyone doing it better.
