I don't know where to begin...

I've literally never read anything like this before, especially in a book supposedly about history. But I'm not so sure it's really just that. There seems to be a touch of madness here, but when I look at Watt's logic it is so simple, so clear. He must shave daily with Occam's Razor. But the best part of this book is his interaction with his grandson, and this is why I think this book is so much more than a 'historical' presentation. He really seems to want to impart his truths to the boy. I think his humor is wickedly sharp, but he can be tender as well. But only for the Little Man, of any stripe. In short, he's either a madman (according to the common wisdom) or a very well read and very discerning student of human nature. How else can you span the times from Troy till now with a unified vision that is coherent, although certainly unconventional? The best read I've had in years!

I am writing this review from the perspective of a former American military officer who served in the combat arms at some point during the last 20 years in southeast and southwest Asia. I am also writing this review from the perspective of a Catholic; I refrain from calling myself traditional or liberal - the word Catholic should suffice to mean I believe in one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church and what the Church teaches. The perspective I write from is important so that readers can understand my frame of reference.
This book will hurt feelings, especially if you are thin-skinned. If you can't take sarcasm or someone challenging the politically correct view of history, you may not enjoy it. However, whether you like it or not, read it you should (medicine is never sweet). The format of the book is very clear, particularly because the narrative is aimed at a young man (the author's grandson); if you can't explain something to a child, you don't know the subject well enough. The author first establishes his frame of reference (as I did at the start of my review) and then proceeds to explain history up to the present (and possible future) through that lens. My opinion is that a reader's propensity to like or dislike this book will largely be based on their willingness to understand and come to the conclusion that there is one Truth (Christ) and that all of history is the story of God reaching out to fallen man through Him. If a reader has this understanding and frame of reference, the rest of the book will make sense. If a reader believes that there is no truth (as Pilate did), this book is just another man's opinion. Would the "tolerant" people of the world agree this book has merit? They should if they are truly "tolerant."
From a military/political perspective, the premise that Ianto puts forth concerning Russia is not only plausible, but quite possible if...Russia is not converted (you probably thought I was going to say...if America continues to weaken, which is only a band-aid). The Soviet Union may have collapsed but the heart of the Godless, communist state is still alive. Putin appears to be a strong leader and he appears to want to make Russia "great." The conditions in the world today have been compared to those right before World War I. Could a world war happen again? Absolutely. Don't believe me? Read the New York Times for yourself (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/27/opinion/world-war-iii.html?_r=1). Though the exact events may not occur as Ianto predicts (and most certainly they will not), I believe the end result will still be the same. Russia is seeking to dominate and spread her errors throughout the world as Our Lady warned at Fatima in 1917. Our Lady predicted the slaughter of World War II during that apparition as the consequence of the failure to convert Russia. As a man of arms, though I would like to think earthly battle will solve the problem of Russia, I know in my heart that only the conversion of Russia will solve this problem. Note, other problems will still arise, as they must until the Second Coming of Christ.
In closing, I believe the purpose of Ianto's book is to remind us all that we need to heed the words of Our Lady of Fatima (Mary the Mother of Christ, revered by the not-misogynist Catholic Church) to pray for the conversion of Russia (as she pleaded in 1917 at Fatima) so that the grim future outlined by Ianto will be nothing more than a fiction that "weiner dogs" can yip at.

A Must Read

The George Santayana quote of "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," has taken on fairly ubiquitous usage in modern times. This despite two facts: we modern men really do not know our history; and, we view time as linear rather than cyclical. We neither know our history nor do we have enough respect for our past to think it relevant for our future. The first fact can be easily remedied. History can be studied. The second one, however, cannot as easily be fixed. The second fact, that our modern minds are programmed to think of the passage of time as a totally linear phenomenon, is much harder to address. It is part and parcel of modernity to view the passage of human events through the lens of what some call Whig history -- this linear advancement in civilization. When this linear advancement perspective dominates our worldview, it is very difficult indeed to view, as Shakespeare said, "past as prologue."
Watt's book provides an earth-shattering paradigm shift for us moderns. The Barbarian Bible is the antidote! Watt breaks the dominate paradigm and offers us a new (yet old) perspective. In showing us history, he highlights the watershed classical events that are foundational to Western Civilization, yet are almost unknown today. Then he demonstrates the connective temporal tissue between those events from antiquity to our times today.
Watt could have used Santayana's famous quote as a subtitle for his book. It fits perfectly. For the rest of us, if we truly believe the message within Santayana's famous one liner, then I suggest you start by reading The Barbarian Bible!
